white stripe on side of screen

hello gang.

recently a thin white stripe has appeared on the right side of my screen on my beloved x60s thinkpad
sporting statler stable..
.
at first i thought it might be a conky issue but just noticed that it is also there on the boot screen.  am
i screwed--is this a bad lcd?

here.s the weird thing--i was just uploading the screenshot to omploader to reference the issue here
but the screenshot actually doesn.t show the problem...

any help or clues appreciated,

Re: white stripe on side of screen

This sounds like a hardware problem if you see it both in boot and after. You could try a different live CD and see if it persists there, but I think it will.

Do you have any "position" options anywhere? I don't use a laptop, but my desktop monitor has controls for horizontal and vertical positioning. If the horizontal position is set wrong I can get something like you are describing.

@mickey

A guy I work with has an Asus doing the same thing.  It's hardware related more than likely and maybe the cable connecting your LCD isn't firmly seated.

Re: white stripe on side of screen

thanks for responses guys.  my suspicion is hardware too.  any idea how hard would it be to dig around
and find where the lcd cable is connected?  as to the position options, i haven.t changed anything myself
recently so that doesn.t seem likely, unless it can happen by itself (quirk).

Re: white stripe on side of screen

I've never "operated lol on an x60 before but it should be fairly easy if you've built hardware before.  Thinkpads tend to come apart better than most.  There's a few things to note though from Thinkpad's I've pulled apart before.  There's little plugs that cover up the screws and what not.  Once those come out they don't go back in.  The techs that do the warranty work on those machines have spare ones the put back in.  It's purely cosmetic but I just want to warn you.  Of course there might be other things as well.  If you're savvy I reccomend checking out some youtube on you your model as well as some thinkpad forums.  Cheers.

Re: white stripe on side of screen

Great advice has already been given.  My 2¢:  Working on laptops requires a much more delicate touch than working on a desktop box.  If you think you're being careful enough, you're probably not; if you think you're being too careful, maybe you're being careful enough.

The cable to the power button on my netbook needs to be unplugged before I can tip the keyboard out.  Didn't know about this the first time I opened it up; fortunately, I've a fairly deft touch with a soldering iron.

Re: white stripe on side of screen

I in no way have any suggestions for the solution, but I can mention I've had a similar problem with ubuntu and couple other different linux versions but mine was a magenta stripe down the left side. this was on both my older netbook and my desktop. I am not sure if this is similar in the version aspects, but it sounds similar in the aesthetic aspect

Re: white stripe on side of screen

thanks again for the responses.  curiously, the 3pixel wide white stripe recently morphed to blue and now it is the same width only magenta, black, and white.  owing to the facts that this is my favorite laptop of all time and i have minimal experience tweaking laptop hardware, i.ve decided to simply regard this stripe as a charming character defect.

Re: white stripe on side of screen

Definitely sounds like hardware.

Have you had the case open yet?  You may be able to fix this with a little acetone & a q-tip to the contacts on the screen ribbon cable and connector, but I suspect this is a symptom of damage to the screen itself.

I just took apart my eeepc to replace the fan (extremely poor design meant that i had to remove the motherboard as the fan was screwed to the underside)
but it wasnt all that hard

google some youtube videos about how to take a netbook apart
