Hey there! I'm Taylor from Atlanta, Georgia, in the US. I'm an undergraduate student at Georgia Tech, and after a bit of revitalization of my interest in Linux, I started distro hunting for a new place to call home. I was a brief Slackware user under Blackbox in my early teens, but that was years ago, and I barely remember anything about it. I used Ubuntu for a time when my netbook started rebelling against my Windows install, but that was my own damn fault for playing with the registry. (In retrospect, that's probably WHY I switched to linux. Why SHOULDN'T I get to play with my system's innards?)
But! I do remember the nice clean look of the *box environs, and as I was searching, I knew I wanted something clean and minimalist but not so bare that I had to build the whole system from scratch. I'm kind of a utilitarian kind of user, but I'm also somewhat fresh to much of the more interesting linux nonsense, what with being years gone from any real linux usage, so I figured ArchLinux probably wasn't a good place to start.
All in all, the #! community seems like a nice place, so why not?
Well, as of late, I've become a little disillusioned with my original impressions of the Debian-based system. I'm having some issues with my sound card that I've yet to resolve, and it's dirtying my view of the OS. I'm an avid audiophile and amateur musician, and having a malfunctioning audio device is no bueno. If I can get that fixed and get around these obnoxious and seemingly ubiquitous permissions restrictions (I'll probably just log into root in the future.) I'll be a happy Crunchbanger.
TL;DR I'm ready to love this distro but facing some road bumps.

Welcome to #! There are several musicians here, and many people who can help with your sound card issues. If you have questions, please ask! You really should not need to log in as root.
Check out these threads: http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … ic-do-you/ and http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … runchbang/ (or use the search box at the top right corner and search on "music")

hi sledd, welcome to the community!
fwiw, i've spent some time struggling with my Linux audio too. still not sure how i fixed it but somehow i did (sorry can't give you more pointers!) - just so you know, it is definitely possible. i'd suggest you start a thread on your specific issue and see what happens...
