Hi all,
I need some help here. I've noticed that my USB devices are not being connected as I would expect. That is to say, I don't get something like /dev/ttyUSB* after plugging in a device. Specifically, I am trying to get my Garmin GPSmap 60CSx working and accessible by someone other than root.
Here's a snippet of what I get for dmesg|tail immediately after plugging in the device:
usb 2-1: USB disconnect, address 2
usb 2-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3
usb 2-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choiceand lsusb says:
Bus 005 Device 004: ID 04f2:b071 Chicony Electronics Co., Ltd
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 004 Device 002: ID 0b05:b700 ASUSTek Computer, Inc.
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 091e:0003 Garmin International GPSmap (various models)
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 046d:c526 Logitech, Inc.
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hubSo I know the Garmin device is being detected correctly.
I've also gone through /etc/udev/rules.d/50-gpsd.rules, and all looks good there. Taking some other advice, I've looked at and edited the file /lib/udev/gpsd.hotplug.wrapper and added the file hotplug.functions. This still doesn't work.
Note that I can access the GPS device using gpsbabel as root (using the usb: filehandle). But I really need to be able to run it without root priveleges.
Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance!

I don't know if it's just the Garmin devices that are having problems... I can't seem to mount any of my USB devices.
At first I thought it was just my phone, an LG Vu, that was giving me problems, but I just now found out my external hard drive, a Passport, won't mount either. In fact, they don't even show up in PCMan at all, though they do seem to be detected by lsusb:

EDIT: Of course, after I post this, I reboot my laptop and my external HD connects right away... well, still doesn't recognize the phone, which it used to do.
