-- ok, I will start with the things that I like about #!

*openbox :)
*light and fast
*yeah, it's stable
*beautiful + easy to configure openbox gui, icons, conky, ...
*good default applications and almost every linux program is in synaptic!

-- now the things that prevent me from using it as first OS:

*I have an ati radeon hd 5830 card and it's not possible to install the newest proprietary diver. When I watch a video with vlc, than I have tearing. I also have this in ubuntu 12.04, but in ubuntu I can install 'AMD Catalyst™ 12.4 Proprietary Linux x86 Display Driver' and select the option to prevent tearing in the AMD control center.. Being able to watch videos without tearing is crucial for the most people.. :) The pc of my sister has a NVIDEA card, and doesn't have this problem because I installed this:

So I know that it's a specific hardware problem, but please make sure that the waldorf release will have good ATI/AMD drivers!

*On both computers I have the problem that the 'hibernate' option doesn't work. The computer displays an error and shuts down. (and hangs on the next startup) And yes, I have enough swap space.

*I was always able to install #! via usb via linuxlive usb creator, but now I have an installation error, that it can't find the cd drive when trying to install via usb. Is this a bug in the new iso files?

*why do we have to install ntfs-config? I think ntfs partitions should be automatically recognised in a modern distro..

But when these things get fixed it will become my favorite OS for sure ;-)

1) you can install AMD Catalyst™ Proprietary Display Driver
2) not sure on this one, #! is Debian Stable, Ubuntu is a mixed distro of SID, Testing and backports but here's a link Hibernation
3) not sure on the installation error, but here's a link, too. “unable to find a medium containing a live file system” error when installing
4) Installing the rest (like ntfs-config) is fairly simple. Not everyone has a ntfs file system they need to read.

#2 seems many people have this problem - I would simply forget it for now big_smile

If you have access to a linux OS, you can solve #3 by copying the iso file to USB using the dd command. It seems to be a method which works best of all (compared to unetbootin, Lili USB, Universal USB).
dd if=/path/to/crunchbang.iso of=/dev/sdX
where sdX is your USB stick (example sdc, not sdc1)

I take #4 as a rhetorical question wink

In general, stick to the open source driver, this is just for those who can't afford to, because their laptop is burning hot and stuff like that. Else, if you want the latest driver, you need Xorg 1.10 (that's from backports) or higher, and kernel 2.6.39 or higher. Don't even try to do this if you have the "stable" version of #! (kernel 2.6.32 and Xorg 1.7). Stick to the open source driver, buy an Nvidia card or a new laptop.

1) I used that installer and the result was that my pc hanged after a reboot and never got at the login screen again :s
2) I checked your link but I'm a noob concerning hibernation, and this isn't a systematic guide to fix hibernation problems.. I tried a lot of linux distro's on my computers and never got a hibernation problem. With crunchbang I have them on both computers. Which makes me think that crunchbang doesn't have good support for this.
3) I only have this error on crunchbang, I can install kubuntu or chakra from usb without any problems. So I think that my BIOS isn't the problem..
4) I agree that it's simple to install ntfs-config and that not everyone has a ntfs file system they need to read. BUT most people have windows, and as a result, a lot of people have a ntfs file system that they need to read.

Shaman, I was actually pointing you towards the fact you should look into how to install Catalyst on your setup. There are multiple guides available, even one on the Debian wiki itself. If you won't get it working even after reading that, I will be more than willing to help you troubleshoot (as will other forum members) - but please, saying Crunchbang needs more support for this and that without actually doing some research is above my hat wink

I think a lot of confusion for new comers to linux is figuring out where say, Debian ends and #! begins.
If hibernate hiccups in #!, then it probably hiccups in Debian stable.
If it doesn't hiccup in Ubuntu, then it's either fixed in Debian Testing, SID, or one of the forked repositories in Ubuntu.

So, ntfs-config, I never needed it nor I installed it and I have also NTFS drives. tongue

#! is not Ubuntu, it is a real Debian distro and it can be a pain to have the latest on Stable at least. Maybe try Waldorf, our prop guides, the Debain Wiki was mentioned already.

Yes, Belgian :) So after shutting down X, I could run this script, and I had the choice between the ati hd 5800 driver or the ati hd 3200 driver. I chose the 5800 driver. For the other options I chose the defaults. After a reboot I had a black screen.. Any suggestions?

Ok, I figured it out :)

Really strange that there's no Crunchbang guide for this.. Here's what you have to do to install the ATI Radeon HD driver when 'The definitive guide to proprietary AMD graphics drivers' & 'smxi/sgfxi script' doesn't work (on Crunchbang Statler):

Add a "non-free" component to /etc/apt/sources.list, for example:
# Debian Squeeze/6.0
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian squeeze main contrib non-free

Update the list of available packages, then install the relevant linux-headers, fglrx-control and fglrx-driver packages:
# sudo apt-get install update
# sudo aptitude -r install linux-headers-2.6-$(uname -r|sed 's,[^-]*-[^-]*-,,') fglrx-control fglrx-driver
This will also install fglrx-glx, fglrx-modules-dkms and other recommended packages. DKMS will build the fglrx module for your system.

If the X Window System is running: shutdown and reboot in recovery mode!!

Unload the radeon and drm modules:
# modprobe -r radeon drm

Create or amend /etc/X11/xorg.conf to include a Device section and request use of the fglrx driver:
This command creates and configure automatically a xorg.conf file to use the ATI proprietary driver:

# aticonfig --initial

You can otherwise edit it by yourself:

# sensible-editor /etc/X11/xorg.conf

A minimal /etc/X11/xorg.conf example is shown below:
Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI"
Driver "fglrx"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
DefaultDepth 24
EndSection

Save the file and exit the editor before continuing.

Start the X Window System (startx) as a regular user, or start your display manager.

And I changed the

# invoke-rc.d gdm3 stop
or
# invoke-rc.d kdm stop

because that doesn't work in openbox..
