Definitely off-topic.

It was a passing thought but as A) I am due to begin university [again] soon and B) I'm soon to be signing a salary-paid employment contract of < 20 hours I just wanted to check that there is no legislation stopping students from working more than n hours?

I've never had to consider this before as all my past employments have been casual work, on and off.

The only way I can see it not being legal to work as much as you want is if you are still considered a minor, I ran into a similar problem when I was 16, was offered a contract job for a company but had legal issues(IE I couldn't legally sign the contract.)

Re: Definitely off-topic.

There definitely was a regulation about students - who are exempt from income tax, remember - only workinga certain number of hours per week (16?). After all, if you could work any number we'd ALL be registered part-time at some college and paying no tax, and there's no way HMRC are going to let that happen! If you call your college, or your local tax office, they'll tell you quickly what the score is.

I still need to claim tax back... I got taxed while I was a student, and never got around to arguing with them. i'm owed £100 and something back.

Re: Definitely off-topic.

I'm owed about £165 tax from student working in 1996. Yeah, I can't see the Revenue letting me get that...
