[SOLVED] Installing from USB not functioning

I have just loaded the latest 64bit crunchbang 10 onto a USB using win32diskimage.
I cannot get the Graphical Installation option when I boot, only Text Installation; this freezes on the first screen (region selection).

I can load into the Live environment, but no installer pops up after waiting for 10 minutes.  I've tried executing the installer from the USB pen, but I don't have write permission or the password for Live su.

I've installed many times before, and I'm sure I've done so from USB...  What could be the source of my problem?

Re: [SOLVED] Installing from USB not functioning

Can't give an answer on what the problem was, just want to let you know that the 'dd' method worked for me (around half an hour ago) but with the new Waldorf image.

http://crunchbang.org/download/testing

Maybe you want to try?

Another idea, when you are already in Windows, is using livelinux usb installer (liliusb) which has worked for most users.

Re: [SOLVED] Installing from USB not functioning

Thank you for the suggestion.

I tried downloading Waldorf 64bit image and lilusb.  It set up the USB successfully but when I do the Install it gets past the Region & Keyboard stage, then claims that it cannot find the CD-ROM!
It crashes if I attempt "Live Session" hmm

Re: [SOLVED] Installing from USB not functioning

For the "can't find CD-ROM" try to add kernel boot parameters:

reboot, then in GRUB choose "Install" but press [e], then move the cursor to the end of the kernel boot line (you see something with ro single) and there add:

cdrom-detect/try-usb=true

Press F10 or Ctrl-x (I think) to boot then

Re: [SOLVED] Installing from USB not functioning

Sorry to have bothered you, it is [TAB] - I have only run the new installer once big_smile

And put the parameter behind the quiet you see there. you can also replace quiet with verbose and add the parameter. Leave the last part intact.

To boot, press [Enter].

The instructions before applied to the "Statler" images.

Re: [SOLVED] Installing from USB not functioning

I managed to run it with the extra parameter.  It still looked for, and failed to detect, the CD.  I did manage to get it to search for other removable media, but this also failed hmm

Re: [SOLVED] Installing from USB not functioning

Do you have access to a Linux computer? If yes, try the dd install method. Instructions are here: http://crunchbanglinux.org/wiki/statler … stallation

We are here to help if you get stuck.

Edit: http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/post/214327/#p214327 try this before, maybe it helps.

Re: [SOLVED] Installing from USB not functioning

I'm just checking that there are no errors on the usb stick.  I'll boot into a vm and install onto the penstick with the dd method next.  Thanks smile

Re: [SOLVED] Installing from USB not functioning

Amazing, just dd/sync the ISO onto the USB-stick,installed with no trouble!
I thought,I'd to install a helper for that,but such an easy procedure,I can't
believe it!
A big thank to the guy who brought this up (was that you, machinebacon?)!

Ah! I just happened to be looking over this topic and saw that. I never knew about the dd install method so thank you.

Totallyyy bugs me how the majority of iso to usb tools I've found are for Windows. It's great to know there's a cli method for Linux use without the training wheels.

Re: [SOLVED] Installing from USB not functioning

Ok,ok,just thought, pvsage is a friend of some cryptic wordings...
@ pvsage: Could you please translate your statement for people which
are not native english speakers?
My phrase above comes from a joke in german, which means, blond women are stupid ones.
So they're always saying:"I'm blond,please speak slowly!"
And Krauts are the people who like such jokes, besides other things...

Re: [SOLVED] Installing from USB not functioning

^ We also have blond jokes in America.  Millions of them.  Some of them are even natural blonds! tongue  (See what I did there?)

hella: "hell of a" or "heck of a lot"; "very much".  Apparently of Northern Californian surfer slacker origin.

seksi:  Nerdy spelling of "sexy".  People who front as (that means "pretend to be") elite hackers like to use such silly, awkward phonic substitutions.

innit:  This is an odd contraction of "isn't it" that is apparently common in some parts of London.

So the translation is "Heck of a lot sexier than using something like Unetbootin, isn't it?"
