Hello again,
After installing scim for typing in Chinese (I followed the howto), I had a problem: using the number keys wouldn't work, for example: I type wo and expect to get "我" after choosing it in the list with "1" but instead I would get "我&" because I'm using a French azerty where lowercase 1 is &. "2" would get me a "é" instead of the second choice, and so on. I could however use the up&down vertical keys to choose the character and press space to input it, but that's too slow. Then I tried using an online IME and guess what, same problem that I had with scim (also "1" gives me a different character than the one under 1.)
Edit: I replaced scim with ibus, had some problems, but now it works, no problem toggling, just I have a similar problem that I had with scim (not working with my azerty). However, unchecking "Use system keyboard layout" sets my keyboard as qwerty which works, just it's not azerty so it's inconvenient (mostly for punctuation, and I haven't used qwerty for 4 years) so now the problem is getting ibus to work with azerty or any online ime, even though it works on my other French computer. Any solution for the keyboard issue?
Sorry for the trouble!

Hello,
can't help you with the azerty, but:
the standard toggle is Ctrl + Space, provided that there is an input window to type in (ibus reports "No input window" if an input indow is not selected). Which dictionary is chosen in ibus -> preferences -> Input Method ? Have you also tried using another fontset (ttf-wqy-microhei / ttf-wqy-zenhei) and probably chosen it as custom font in ibus -> preferences -> Use custom font ?
I report iBus as perfectly working (in squeeze/wheezy/sid) with QWERTY and QWERTZ keyboards, with the ibus-pinyin and ibus-googlepinyin engines, in all DE's so far.

Ok I reinstalled #! after after formatting my drives and other things that I read online about using SSDs, now I installed ibus and components along with uming and ukai fonts, and it works...with the exception that it still doesn't work properly with my azerty: it had a similar problem as I had with scim, meaning that because on an azerty, the numbers are uppercase of symbols (&é"'(-è_çà = 1234567890 holding shift, though I'm sure you all know this) so in ibus, with "use system keyboard layout" checked, selecting the character in the menu using the numbers doesn't work. However, if unchecked, it uses a qwerty layout and therefore works, I just have to make an effort to type as if my keyboard were a qwerty ^^
So I'll continue to look this up on the web, but it's now less of a problem and more of a convenience.

Hi Martin,
good to know that it "works" - it seems to be a bug (at least in Ubuntu, but I think this affects Debian too) https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/434016
