Wireless isn't working on Asus U31JG

Hi there, new Crunchbang user here!

Been using different Linux dists (Ubuntu and Mint) before just installed Crunchbang for the first time. I like what I'm seeing but I have problem getting the wireless to work correctly. Tried installing all different kinds of B43-installers but I think I've made it worst with conflicts and such.

How can I check what is causing the problem and how could I fix it?

Sincerely, Victor

Re: Wireless isn't working on Asus U31JG

This is your wireless device.

03:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8191SEvA Wireless LAN Controller [10ec:8171] (rev 10)
    Subsystem: AzureWave Device [1a3b:1107]

It does not use the b43 driver, that is why the last command returned nothing.

PLease install the firmware-realtek package, see if that helps.

sudo apt-get install firmware-realtek

In the mean time I am looking which driver we have for your device.

Installed firmware-realtek but still no output from dmesg | grep b43.

Re: Wireless isn't working on Asus U31JG

'rtl8192se' is the driver for your wireless device. I am not sure if it comes with the 2.6.32-5-amd64 kernel.
If wireless does not work after installing the firmware, I would advise you to install the latest (20120207) bpo version of the #! image.

I've found out that the rtl8192se is missing from the firmware-realtek via a bug-report (http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=609784). Went to find the driver myself and found it on Realteks homepage (http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dow … =true#2302) althought, I don't have the knowledge to install it...

Re: Wireless isn't working on Asus U31JG

The firmware-realtek package from backports does include the firmware. So, unless you really want to stay with stable, I would advise again to install the bpo version.

Re: Wireless isn't working on Asus U31JG

Since this is my wireless chip, I can give the following advice for people who want to stay with the stable version:

1. Go to this download page at realtek.com.

2. Scroll to the entry for RTL8191SE-vA2.

3. Download the appropriate proprietary driver for your kernel.

4. Extract the archive and follow the instructions in the appropriate text file (I can't remember if it's called README or something else). Basically, you'll be using the "make" and "make install" commands without first using "./ configure" because there's no configuration file in this archive.

Based on my past experience, this should give you functioning wireless, though you may have to reboot first.
