Re: Atheros AR5008, Can't get it working

You are probably missing the firmware package:

sudo apt-get install firmware-atheros

Re: Atheros AR5008, Can't get it working

There is no driver loaded for your atheros card.
Post output of

uname -a
dmesg|grep -E -i 'ath|wlan'
lspci -knn

I cannot find any kernel module that loads device id ff1c - that is probably why no driver gets loaded - Is this on old card?

Edit: found this in ath9k-dev mailing list:

Even assuming the card is bust, there are two atheros device IDs - ff1c
and ff1d - that designate AR5008 cards (according to pci.ids and google)
and that are not supported by any driver currently.

Here is the starting thread: http://www.mail-archive.com/ath9k-devel … 03918.html

Re: Atheros AR5008, Can't get it working

Thanks ebay for selling me useless cards.

Thanks xaos for finding that, now I can stop trying to get it working.

Re: Atheros AR5008, Can't get it working

Is this a newer card?  If so what kernel version are you running?  If it is less than 2.6.38 try upgrading your kernel.

Re: Atheros AR5008, Can't get it working

I'm on 2.6.36, what would one do to upgrade to 38?

Re: Atheros AR5008, Can't get it working

Lots of cards are branded AR5008. Whats important is the vendor-id:product-id tuple you find in the output of 'lspci -knn'. And yours is not in any Debian kernel I have seen since 2.6.32.

Re: Atheros AR5008, Can't get it working

So I bought another one and I can't get it working either.

02:00.0 Ethernet controller [0280]: Atheros Communications Inc. AR5008 Wireless Network Adapter [168c:0024] (rev 01)
Subsystem: Atheros Communications Inc. Device [168c:0033]

If I have both the atheros and the intel card in, neither card works.
If I rmmod ath9k, the intel card starts working again, if I modprobe ath9k the intel stops.

rfkill list shows:

0: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: yes

If I turn the wifi switch off, soft blocked changes to yes but hard blocked never changes.
I've spend the last 3 hours googling and trying lots of different "solutions", all the solutions that solved the problem for other people don't work for me.

EDIT::

I finally fixed it.
I had tried sitting it in the primary half mpcie slot, just hanging out (couldn't screw it down as the slot is for half size cards), then I tried booting it. I was greeted with an "Unauthorised wireless network card" error, which brought me to http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_w … twork_card

I then tried "Another safer method: you can plug the wireless card into the spare WWAN slot (the second miniPCI express slot) with pin-20 taped over.", booted up into Crunchbang and it worked right away. Connected to my network and all. 25mbps without the antenna plugged in.
