Hey guys, I'm Askeptykal... Skepty if you find that too hard to pronounce. Anyway, I've got a bit of a story as to how I came to use CrunchBang.
I started using Linux about two years ago, my freshman year of college, with the freshly-released Ubuntu Feisty. And I loved it, so much nicer than Windows. Over the past two years I've switched from Ubuntu to Linux Mint, and back to Ubuntu Studio (there was a period in there I used Fedora for, like, a month, bleh, I couldn't stand it). So, over the past week, I downloaded the release candidate of Ubuntu Jaunty, to beat the inevitable rush that came yesterday. So I installed it, and was messing around with it, and I realized that it was going kind of slow... my laptop wasn't top-notch when I first got it three years ago, and it's starting to show its age. Now, I love Gnome, but it didn't look like I could stick with it for much longer. So, I started looking for alternatives. First I went to Xubuntu, figuring it would be easy to integrate into and such. So I tried it out. And it was pretty nice, except that I quickly learned that I was not a fan of XFCE.
So I went to Distrowatch looking for a new option. I saw the name "CrunchBang". Which was a pretty kick-ass name, so I decided to check it out. And it seemed pretty cool, so yesterday I downloaded and installed it. I booted into it, and it seemed pretty nice... except that my ethernet connection wasn't working. Apparently it's been a problem, I soon found out after searching the forums for a fix. I tried a couple different things suggested by members, but nothing was really doing it. However, I did hear some reports that the Lite version didn't have this issue. So I downloaded that and tried it. And it still wouldn't connect.
At this point, I was pretty desperate. I wanted to give CrunchBang a try, but it would be a no-go if I had no internet connection. So I found a third option, which was to install Ubuntu (preferably from the CLI only installation), then get and run a script which would instill the files needed to change Ubuntu to CrunchBang. So I downloaded and burned the Jaunty minimum installation CD and tried to install it. And I couldn't get the release notes from the mirror when I tried to install it. This frustrated me, but I quickly thought up a new solution - I'd try to install the full release of Ubuntu Intrepid, and then run the script. And I did that overnight. When I checked on it this morning, I found that the script had executed, and the network connected, but it was still too Ubuntu for me, especially when it booted into Gnome. But I was getting closer.
So for my final attempt, I went back to the Jaunty minimum install CD again, this time having researched a few new mirrors (figuring that the official mirrors were probably jam-packed with people getting the Jaunty release). And after a few attempts, I got it to install. So I downloaded and ran the CrunchBang script, let that install for a few hours, and now, after a day's worth of trying to get CrunchBang connected to the internet, here I am, posting this.
Job well done.
Anyway, first impressions of CrunchBang... I'm liking it. Everything is just so quick and snappy, I'm not used to that! Gotta get the system configured to my tastes, but things are looking good at this point... hopefully it will be worth the effort I put into it!

Hello Askeptykal, welcome to the forums
Great to read of your adventures (and eventual success) so far. I'm sure you've learned plenty about Linux along the way.

Thanks guys!
Yeah, it was a struggle, but for the best, I think. I'm really liking CrunchBang so far, probably even more so once I get it configured to my liking. I'm practically chomping at the bit to mess around with my Conky setup
