The nvidia module was not installed by smxi.
We will have to do things manually
1. Go to the nvidia site and download the driver. Your card needs the 173.1431 version
Browse to this page: http://www.geforce.com/Drivers
Select
GeForce
GeForce 500 Series
GeForce GTX 550 Ti
Linux 64-bit
Click download.
Agree to the license
Download to your folder $HOME/downloads
When that is done, Come back here in the forum.
Edit: Your system IS 64-bit, yes?

Hi Xaos52,
yes my system is 64 bits.
I got the NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-285.05.09.run file.
What have I to do now?
Offline
OK.
Ctrl+Alt+F1
sudo service gdm stop
cd $HOME/downloads (or the directory you downloaded the driver)
sudo sh ./NVIDIA[tab] ([tab] means just press tab key, this will auto-complete the filename) There will be a number of questions asked: ( I dont remember exactly which ones, but...)
There will be a question stating that your compiler(gcc) version is too new. Make sure you continue with the install. The result will be OK.
Then there will be a question if the configuration should be generated. Answer yes.
When it finishes normally, you can restart the X environment:
sudo service gdm startHopefully your problem will be solved then.
If it isnt, you will have gained 3D accelleration.
