OS recommendation acer aspire one d257

Hey guys.  This is an awesome site and I belong to a couple of forums(not linux ones) and I have been lurking on a few of them.  I'm kinda of hesitant to sign up to them because every time I see someone that post a thread, they get no replies because that have no post.  You guys seem to be pretty nice to the new people.  Any ways I'll get to the point.

I am very new to linux but I'm decent with computers.  I just replaced my asus EEE that I really miss with an acer aspire one d257-1682.  I was looking into dual booting it with win 7 starter and some other linux..  I have no idea where to start and since this is used for entertainment/school I don't want to mess it up.  I like have win 7 because its good to have for my school.

Are there any how-to's for something that I'm looking for.  Thanks!

Here are the specs

That's a fine Linux book, only thing i see is that you may have to have a wired connection to install your wireless drivers if they give your problems. Other than that just be sure to install windows first partition from with in windows, and then install crunchbang to the new partition.

Re: OS recommendation acer aspire one d257

Basically you can install any Linux on it, of course with 1GB RAM you should choose a desktop environment other than Gnome or KDE - which leaves the options XFCE, LMDE or any window manager like OpenBox, Fluxbox etc.

Crunchbang suits well, and as psycho mentioned, there might be a problem with the Atheros wifi adapter (for further info see: http://wiki.debian.org/ath5k / http://wiki.debian.org/ath9k)

If Win7 is installed already, the installer gives the option to install #! (or any other distro) side-by-side - be sure to check that the GRUB is written correctly.

I have #!Crunchbang Statler (Xfce) in 64-bit ... running on my Acer Aspire One 10" Netbook.

#!Crunchbang works perfectly on my AAO Netbook ... literally, everything "worked - outta da box"

I am very happy with it . . . it doesn't get any better, than this.  cool

thank you so much guys.  This stuff is like a foriegn language to me.  I look at everything you guys suggested.

Also can I just follow this link ( http://lifehacker.com/5403100/dual+boot … ct-harmony ) and just use #! instead without any problems?

Re: OS recommendation acer aspire one d257

Follow this guide for windows (at the bottom). After that, boot via USB, and load into the live session. Open a terminal (Windows+T) and type in

sudo gparted

Resize partitions how you'd like (You probably have 2 on there now, a small one at the beginning for recovery, and a large one that takes up the rest. Shrink the large one by however much you want for linux). At this point, you can either set up the partitions exactly how you want them in the end (I suggest at least a separate / and /home/, and a swap) or let the installer do it. The installer tells you exactly what it's doing, but it's a bit easier to see what's happening if you use GParted to make the partitions. Set the empty, greyed out area as an EXTENDED partition. Within that, you can make a root partition (I have a 5.5GB root partition, and I'm only using 2.6GB on it formatted ext4), a swap partition (at least 2x your ram, so 2GB formatted swap), and /home directory(the rest of the extended partition, formatted ext4)

Apply the changes, wait for it to finish, and reboot to USB. Choose graphical installer, and answer questions until you get to installing. Ignore the guided options, and choose manual. Find the partition you chose to make as root, and set  "use as" to /. Set the swap partition to "use as" swap, and the other partition to "use as" /home. Make sure / and /home are still ext4, and tell it you're done making changes and to write to disk.

Reboot, skip USB, and you'll come to GRUB. It gives you 5 seconds to push any button, which will let you choose what you want to boot. Choose crunchbang and VOILA, new OS.

Re: OS recommendation acer aspire one d257

@demarsjcd
Yes, the lifehacker article should work.

Here's a simple (no-fuss) installation guide by me:
1. Wipe the drive clean.
2. Install Win7 to one primary partition via their proprietary installer (size depends on much you're going to use windows 7)
3. Boot Crunchbang liveusb/liveiso and do graphical installer
4. Tell Crunchbang to auto-partition the rest of the unallocated space (Squeezing everything into one home parition is fine)
4a. Please make sure you have a swap partition
4b. Also make sure you install grub to sda, not the ones with number suffixes.
5. Do your windows update and/or cb-welcome script
6. Rejoice.

For the more nitty gritty, Follow thevdude's instructions.  I recommend 64bit and a 2gb swap partition since you have 1gb of ram. I used a 50gb primary partition for windows 7 and that's pretty generous. since I've only used 25gb of it.

*UPDATE* If you want to keep your preinstalled win7 installation, shrink your NTFS partitions within Windows to the desired size for your crunchbang installation and start at step 3.

Re: OS recommendation acer aspire one d257

well after pretty much staying up all night(because I'm too stubborn to quit) I finally figured it out.  I ended up finding universal usb installer because I couldn't get win32 to work.  I am now dual booting thanks to you guys.  Now I just need to learn how to work things like creating a new folder and installing apps.  I have tried a little bit but, school comes first.  Oh, and my girlfriend(even though she complains I'm on the computer too much).
On a side not I love the way this program handles.  There is virtually no fan noise coming from my computer and everything response very quickly.  I love it and it seems like I will be using it the majority of the time as soon as I can learn how to customize and cmd.
I have been looking at all the wiki's, how to's, etc. but do you guys have any "must haves" for this OS.  I was looking at the battery saver but couldn't get it to work.  Thanks again everyone.

Re: OS recommendation acer aspire one d257

mmm, must haves....the defaults are pretty darn good already.  Would good wifi count?:o

Since I'm more of a media junkie, I install mplayer because I can't stand VLC player.  MOC or Deadbeef are great music players if you need one.  WINE is a must if you want to run some windows programs (only if the linux counterpart does not exist).

For firefox enthusiasts, Iceweasel is a no-brainer.
