Just fantastic, thx

After running Linux Joli OS on my netbook (Acer Aspire One), I wanted sth else, something lean, fast and configurable to make a portable guitar studio with some internet and office programs.

I installed the realtime kernel on Joli OS along with hydrogen, guitarix, sooperlooper, ... but changing to much from the normal distro in Joli OS starts to annoy the sync manager.

I first tried some studio distros (musix, ubuntu studio), but they are not very responsive on my machine and preloaded with tons of software I don't really need:

Then I tried the latest Ubuntu (11.04) but the interface is really too slow and badly designed. Not a good start for me.

Then I thought of building my own system under gentoo (I had a freebsd machine 10 years ago) but it would take me weeks to have results. (I can still use vi and a terminal, but after 6 years out of the X business, I am no guru anymore and moved to other payjobs)

Then I came across your website, and tried #! !!!!
I like the basic choice of applications (chromium, abiword, gnumeric, gimp, inkscape) so that I don't have to remove anything.
I really like the very sober openbox WM, and the way it is pre-configured. I immediatly could change my keyboard to FR, the scroll area on my trackpad works out of the box, so does wifi and alsa.
Synaptic showed me directly the biggest amount of applications I've ever seen on a simple distro, even electronics software (that I will need to build some analog effects), and all the music applications that I will need.

I think #! will become my main distro for my netbook studio and even desktop.

The only thing that confused me for 10 sec, was that the shortcuts where still mapped to a qwerty keyboard when I changed to french. On the other hand, I know the location of the keys on a qwerty, so it doesn't really bug me.

Great work.

Re: Just fantastic, thx

hi kaouki, and welcome to #!

the reason the repositories for such a small distro are so big, is because #! is based on Debian, so you're looking at the Debian repo's, really (someone correct me if i'm wrong here)

i think for you keyboard shortcuts you can do something with keymapping, but you'd have to search the forums on that because i've never done so myself.

curious to see how your musical endeavors on Linux work out (clearly you have some experience); i am a Renoise-user myself and still have to get everything to work properly (currently rebooting into Win7 if i want to make music)

#! works really well on the Aspire One, doesn't it? big_smile I love it!

You can change keybindings in rc.xml. hit Super + Space to open the menu, go to openbox, edit rc.xml. Search for keyboard and it'll show you all the keybindings. big_smile
