Hi,
I would like to say this all begins from trying to update chrome since it was not displaying pdf files properly. I have a Sylvania gnetbook with a VIA c7 proc and had crunchbang (ubuntu 8.04) installed for sometime with it working out of the box. However, yesterday I regret I did an apt-get update and apt-get upgrade which had brought me up to Crunch 10 (Ubuntu 10.04). Problem now is I cannot connect to my router (wired or wireless). The wireless constantly searches for an ip address. Here is some info (Im typing this since I have no net on the netbook):
:~$ nm-tool
Device wlan0
type: 802.11 wireless
driver: rtl8187
active: no
hw address 00:15:AF:BF:F1:1F
and then other wireless networks in the area
Network is wep 128 bit open.
seems like things are ok, except it keeps asking for my network key. It nm-applet will not store the key? Also if I click on the network icon on the toolbar and hit manual configuration I get a screen which says "Unsupported platform" and states selecting something may cripple the cpu. I have different distros to choose from here but Ubuntu is only supported up to 8.04??? I dont know it seems like something didnt get upgraded here?
Any help is appreciated.

Can you activate it manually with:
modprobe rtl8187and then verify:
iwconfigOffline
mass04, your comments seem to indicate you expected to upgrade to Ubuntu. You do know that Crunchbang 10 is currently based on Debian Squeeze, or was that a typo?? SEE CrunchBang 10 “Statler” r20110207
