I am running Statler XFCE4. Is there any way to change the screen resolution above 1280 x 800. This is the maximum that I see in the Display dropdown box. Thanks.

Alright if im not mistaken you can just go to the XFCE monitor settings and set your display, from what i see, you have an intel card and those drivers are built into the kernel. You may have a newer card and need a newer kernel however. If that's the case then what you can do is install the back ports kernel which is much newer, then you should be guaranteed to have drivers. In fact regardless it may just be a good idea to install the newer kernel.
and no need to say thanks, the community is just part of the experience lol.

This is what I see in the display settings.

I am sorry but I am complete noob. How do I update my kernel?

before we go doing something drastic, run this command. From what i can tell your card SHOULD be supported, and this may not fix your issue (the new kernel) so be sure you want to try it (there's no way to bork your system if you follow these steps exactly, your just installing a new kernel the old one stays intact lol) Also as a note to do before hand, check your refresh rate and then retry your resolution options.
This will see if you have the intel drivers installed.
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intelIf that returns that it is already installed then well need to do the following.
First things first enable backports so you can get the 2.6.39 kernel.
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.listThen add this to it.
deb http://backports.debian.org/debian-backports squeeze-backports main contrib non-freeThen run
sudo apt-get updateThen do this which starts synaptic
sudo synapticThen search for the kernel
Put this in the search box.
linux-2.6.39-bpoTick the linux-image, the linux-header, and the linux-header-common packages for installation.
Let it install and then reboot and choose the new kernel. This should do the trick. If not then post back and we will continue down our journey lol.
(optional if you get errors installing the kernel, it MAY NOT be required)
Run this
sudo gedit /etc/apt/preferencesThen add this to the end.

Sorry but I have to thank you for your step-by-step instructions.
Unfortunately, it still shows the same resolution choices. Perhaps my hardware doesn't support higher resolution?

wot resolution r u expecting and y do u expect it?

Might be a bad suggestion but if the hardware can handle it, why not force the resolution with xrandr?
