Ran into an issue....looking for insight

OK so #! recognizes my sony walkman out of the box. I am stoked. Old ubuntu systems had all kinds of issues with it. However when I unplugged it the computer went "CRUNCHBANG!" Please spare me lecture on unmounting first. I know I should and normally do, but this time I was i a hurry and didn't. I know how to prevent it, I was just wondering WHY?? Why would it freeze the whole computer if I just pop out a external usb drive? I never had this issue --other then with windozz like 10 yrs ago. Any insight would be wonderful.

Thanx

Re: Ran into an issue....looking for insight

Unfortunately there could be a number of reasons, check your logs to see if there is anything reported, most likely the system is trying to write to a device which no longer exists and freezes the system or udev / hal decided to have a hissy fit or the system just happens to interact with a passing neutrino, in other words we would just be guessing! I recommend  looking at /var/log/messages or install Log Viewer for Gnome to make it a bit easier to read your log files.
