Upgrading to Linux-3.0rc7

I need some help, I downloaded the Linux-3.0rc7 kernel from kernel.org and unpacked. I could compile it all but when I edit grub2 (using update-grub automatically adds the kernel choice when I copy it to /boot). But when I re-boot and choose the 3.0 kernel I get some errors. I tried following a guide on updating kernels for debian but that didn't help. This is my first time installing a new kernel, and I'm wondering if anyone knows an easy guide for installing one on crunchbang or whatever. Thanks, and pic is my current installation.
