Hi,
Firstly I stumbled across #! while looking for a new operating system and it has been the best distro I've used to date! very fast, minimal and flexible! exactly what I wanted on my netbook boot time is incredible! BUT I have two issues one (because I love the distro I can probably learn to live with the other not so much) so if I could get help with either that would be great!
Oh and all these issues is coming from my laptop Toshiba NB550D
http://www.mytoshiba.com.au/products/co … ns#details
1. (most annoying issue) No Sound!
I've looked around and I've seen others with this issue (no sound in headphones or speakers) and I almost positive it is because the hardware in my laptop is so new. So I was just wondering if anyone who beat the problem could lend me some steps on how to fix this. I found one that involved looking for my model and its suggested audio alsa code line to go with it but because mine is new It doesn't seem to have one, at least that I could find!
my audio card is read as: HD-Audio Generic and the chip is: ATI R6xx HDMI.
Side note all things in sound control are turned on and up, under hd-audio generic the only control I get is a check box for something called "IEC958" then if I select HDA ATI SB as my sound car I get all the fader controls.
2. Installing ATI Propriety driver
If I had sound working this would be the one I wouldn't care about! whats a couple of extra pixels! but I thought i'd throw it to anyone if they new how to install this so I could get higher resolution that 800x600. I've followed the Debian instructions and compiled it with Debian/testing but still no go later I've read that it just can't be done because of the lack of flgrx support in squeeze? don't know how true this is but if anyone has successfully installed driver 11.5 I'd love to know how you did that!
Apparently weezy should fix this but I'm not sure when that will be release as stable? anyone?
Also just remembered I'm using both the regular kernel and Liquorix/Zen Kernel they have no difference in these issues.
Thanks for hearing me out and if you need any info or anything please ask! This distro is great and I'd love to get it working to its full!

1) Have you tried using the hda generic driver? Maybe that would work.
2) Sorry, but I use NVidia. Couple of things though:
* "Testing" is actually quite stable
* "Testing" apparently has support for flgrx, so you should probably go for it and upgrade to testing. If you need help, just
ask here or search the forums.

Hi chaanakya!
Thanks for your reply!
1) im pretty sure I've tried both, that is going alsamixer in terminal and selecting the sound card through there? aswell as I've done that in multimedia->volume control yea? or am I missing a step?
2) I didn't know we could get into testing yet! how do we upgrade into it? I tried the usual sudo apt-get upgrade and apt-get update and there was no option or am I again missing a step
sorry If I'm a bit slow off I've come from ubuntu among other things!
Thanks for your help!

I'd be inclined to try apt-pinning if you need specific packages from testing. Have a look at hardran3's tutorial. A link to it is in his sig.
If you want to upgrade to testing completely you just need to edit /etc/apt/sources.list and change each reference for squeeze to testing. Expect some hiccups though, particularly if using the Xfce edition.
There are several threads/posts here on how members have faired upgrading. I'd try looking in the new Help & Support (testing/unstable) forum

I think everything for fglrx is in stable, (edit) though fglrx 10-9 is a bit long in the tooth. You may want/need the driver available from testing, in which case the apt-pinning thread may interest you.

I have the same video/cpu chip. Installation of Catalyst 11.5 went something like this:
Download it.
open a terminal.
navigate to the directory of the downloaded file using cd and such.
Enter the command:
sudo sh ./ati-driver-installer-11-5*You'll be prompted for the root password.
Choose the default options. When finished, use this command to configure (if you even need to):
sudo amdcccleLog out.
Log back in.
That should be it for pixel greatness.
I have not gotten sound to work, even after trying testing kernels and packages. I did find with a Debian 6.01 (xfce) live disc, that I have the exact same error message with sound (using the default VLC). With the Debian 6.01 (kde) live disc, sound worked, but it uses Dragon Player. I installed Dragon Player, and it does play, but it has limited capabilities. Sound in other respects still isn't there with the exception of system sounds.

tmillic you are a genius! Thank you so much worked like a dream and dragon player works enough! are you still working on the sound or have you just accepted it until weezy is full any ready? if you do have any breakthroughs I'd happily appreciate a PM! I might continue playing around with it so Ill post back here if I get a breakthrough!
Thanks everyone!

Is genius what one gets after putzing around long enough with the help of others on this forum? ;-)
As for sound, I keep an eye on a few forums for solutions. It's not a priority though. I can always jut put a CD in the old component CD player at home or just use my MP3 player. I use the machine for work and research, and functionality for those tasks is more important than sound.
That said, sound is possible as it works on some debian-based live distros.

I personally use PulseAudio, but ymmv. To set it up, see this thread, although since it's not working with Alsa, I doubt it will work with PulseAudio.

Dear all
I have exactly the same laptop as coyhonker and absolutely loving crunch bang linux, but the sound issue is really bugging me.
I've installer dragon player too, and it does work fine. But any other program (vlc, youtube via the web, etc) and I have no sound. The weird part is that the volume controls in the gui based alsa mixer actually changes the volume for dragonplayer, so the driver must be interacting with the card, but I can't get it to work anywhere except for dragon player, Has anyone got a solution to this problem? Help please, it's driving me nutty.
In all other respects however can I say this distro is AWESOME!
Cheers

Open VLC -> Preferences -> Audio ->
[x] Enable audio
choose Output module: ALSA
Save.
It's possible some software sends sound to your digital HDMI which acts as second sound card. if you enter
aplay -lin terminal, we can check. Post the output here.

Hi Machinebacon
Did as you said in VLC, message upon playback is:
Potential ALSA version problem:
VLC failed to initialize your sound output device (if any).
Please update alsa-lib to version 1.0.23-2-g8d80d5f or higher to try to fix this issue.
aplay -l yields:
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Generic [HD-Audio Generic], device 3: ATI HDMI [ATI HDMI]
Subdevices: 0/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: ALC259 Analog [ALC259 Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
Upon installing pulseaudio package, the HDMI works. Without pulse audio, using dragonplayer I do have sound, but only using that package, all other packages (web via youtube, vlc, etc.) don't work. Also when using the volume control, pressing the mute button on headphones I can hear that there is ouput. What I think is happening is that the system is by default pushing the sound out to HDMI, because I remember on my old laptop I could specify whether to output on either HDMI or internal.
Thanks again for your help, any assistance is greatly appreciated.
And once again can I say this distribution is just fantastic! Kudos to the developers, when I compare the Windows 7 starter distribution to crunchbang, windows feels like a bloated piece of you know what!

Hi, rboroughs!
I see, you are using pulseaudio? 2 Questions:
- Are you on XFCE or the Openbox edition of #!?
- What's the output of
apt-cache policy alsa-baseSweaty lads picking up the soap | I love the new "Ignore user" button

Hello mb!
Yes, I installed pulseaudio because it was the only way I could get sound through the HDMI.
apt-cache policy alsa-base yields:
alsa-base:
Installed: 1.0.23+dfsg-2
Candidate: 1.0.23+dfsg-2
Version table:
*** 1.0.23+dfsg-2 0
100 http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ squeeze/main i386 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
I am on the Openbox edition of #!, but I believe I installed the XFCE packages when I first logged on so logging on - I can select a session of either Openbox or XFCE. I prefer Openbox at this stage as it is unbelievably light on system resources. I also upgraded my kernel to the newer edition ( I can't remember the name) if that assists.
Thanks again for your assistance so far.

In this case VLC could be set to pulseaudio as Output module.
If you log in to XFCE, you find the PulseAudio device controls in the "Multimedia" menu. There is a Device Chooser, Volume Control, Volume Control and PulseAudio Manager. I think the Device Chooser brings an Applet to your panel. Pick the Volume Control GUI. In [Configuration] choose the output you prefer (HDMI or Analog), and confirm this channel in [Output Devices].

I'm using the chromium broswer in regular mode. Any help would as usual be greatly appreciated.

Everything looks up-to-date. I would go to XFCE, open the PulseAudio volume control, open a browser with flash video and check if there are new streams showing up in PulseAudio volume control.
