system monitor

hi, am new here and was wondering what the system monitor that is on the right of the default desktop is called, really like it and am thinking of using it on my desktop computer that runs mint, crunchbang is used on my laptop. ty

Hey. I am new here as well. The system monitor thingy is call Conky. Check it out, as there is some great info around this site in reference to it, ie how-tos.

Keep in mind that if you use Gnome in Mint, it's not a good idea to use Conky. Conky doesn't play well with Gnome or KDE from what I've read. It would probably work OK in a GNOME/Openbox session, though; I'm pretty sure Metacity conflicts with Conky, not the entire Gnome environment.

Conky works fine in Gnome, i used to run both when i used mint. (mint 10)
The issue is getting it to start on bootup. That can be a real pain.

That's good to know. I could have sworn I've seen posts in these forums saying it didn't work right with Gnome or KDE. Maybe it just doesn't work right with KDE.

depends on how you set it
i encountered difficulties because both *insert desktop manager here* and conky were trying to be "on top" on the desktop
but tweaking conky's settings can fix that fairly easy

it is advisable to start it after gnome is already loaded with a script
