install compiz:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install compiz compizconfig-settings-manager compiz-fusion-plugins-main compiz-gnome compiz-gtk compiz-fusion-plugins-extra
run:
compiz --replace
add the above to your startup

I have already installed compiz and added that command to session and startup in settings menu but nothing happens.

What output do you get when you run "compiz --replace" from a terminal?
Me: I talk to myself
Myself: Yes, I know.
I: Both of you shut up!

Also, download and run Compiz-Check to see if your hardware will support Compiz...

You may need to install mesa-utils, the script will tell you if you need to. You also didn't say what graphics chip you have, the script will output that too.

Check if you have 3d working by typing:
glxinfo | grep rendering

solved it. I selected save session automatically while logout with compiz running. but there's still a problem. conky disappears if I click on my desktop. it seems to be on a separate layer.

Try changing own_window_type to override in your conkyrc:
own_window_type overrideMe: I talk to myself
Myself: Yes, I know.
I: Both of you shut up!

thanks! I set its value to no and disabled conky.
