Thanks for giving us such a nice, minimalistic distro that just works! Even though the PC I'm running it on can handle a lot more bells and whistles, I'd prefer to be the one who puts them there and chooses what goes! Honestly, though, I love the Openbox setup so much that all it needed was a change of background and a quick tweak to the conky to be perfect. I've also setup an install on my father's PC but have xfce as his default, with HUGE buttons for web and logout on a side panel, because the easier it is to tell what button does what, the better for him.

Hello rediflex, welcome to #! forum.

I'm new too, rediflex, and I like your computing philosophy. I only have 1% of my CPU candles burning with Chrome open, but that is a choice I make. I run openbox too.
I like the way these disparate pieces - tint2, OB, gmrun - all work together so nicely. The only thing I miss from gnome is compiz, specifically wobbly windows.

Thanks, all!
@AlanD: I turned on the wobbly windows in my Mint 10 install, played with the jello-ness for a minute... but really the only thing I miss from compiz/emerald/whatever is the pretty transparent window borders, and honestly I don't miss them much, as that's not what I'm supposed to be looking at anyway! I used to always use wobbly windows also! My geek friends would laugh at me when they saw my windows wiggle. But I liked the "physicalness" that it adds when you move things around.
You actually can install Compiz with Xfce and use its window manager for window borders. You can also install Emerald, but it's not in the Debian repos afaik (so you'd probably need to build it yourself). I actually installed Compiz and all the plugins on a #! Xfce system upgraded to the sid repos in order to see how well it worked. It didn't work quite as well for me out of the box as it does in Gnome (noticeable tearing on rotating the cube, issues with what software determines the number and arrangement of workspaces, etc.), but I didn't mess with it for very long, really. I decided that I didn't miss the wobbling, spinning world of Compiz all that much after all.
The only truly useful Compiz plugins that I do miss sometimes are the ring switcher (which was a great way to view previews of all windows on all workspaces and switch to any of them quickly) and the grid plugin (I want Windows 7/Gnome 3 intuitive window tiling).

Yes that sums it up. But I dont need to be sitting there jiggling windows instead of getting stuff done. I'm getting past missing it.

Rediflex, I'm a Crunchbang Xfce user and I DO have Compiz enabled on it, wobbly windows and all. True, it takes some doing, and it did involve a little trial and error on my part (mostly error LOL), but I eventually found the right combination that permitted me to have my wobbly windows and all.
However, I think you have to have the Xfce version for this, as I don't think that's possible on the Openbox version unless you install the LXDE desktop, which is, in fact, based on Openbox.
Just who is General Failure and what's he doing reading my hard drive?

Welcome to #!
...and thanks for being a good son to your father. I can't get my Dad off that Windows crap with a pry-bar.
