abiword crashes / unusable

Abiword maxes the CPU when I launch it, and quickly becomes unusable.  I've noticed that it will freeze entirely when i hit backspace and I end up having to kill the process.  I've tried deleting config files, uninstalling/reinstalling, running from a terminal and watching for errors, nothing seems to explain the behavior.  Anyone ran across this?

Which version are you using?  I've never actually used abiword, but when I tried it out (when Statler was still alpha2), it worked fine (I dropped it for other reasons).
