I'm not too sure people are avoiding writing malware for Linux just because we're the backbone of many IT infrastructure. I would say its just the combination of a small market share and the difficulty of it.
Until recently, Windows was configured to always have an admin as a default account thus giving the user (and the malware the user downloads) full power. In addition, without UAC or similar, theres no second chance to think over and not run the malware.

I am using AVAST from about a year. ( free version ).
And never en-counted a single problem with it.
