New User Hoping #! Can Save This Laptop

I'm a new Crunchbang user, although I have used another Linux distro for quite a while.  I have been looking for the past three months for a distro that would keep a (somewhat dated) Dell Inspiron 2650 laptop working well for me - and although it has only been a few days, I think #! is it.

I am beginning to remember how much fun computing used to be before everything was GUI, and how much fun it can be to actually have to think through package selection, installation options, and so on- - not to mention solving the occasional issue on your own.

It may sound funny, but THANKS for not doing everything for me out of the box!

Welcome to #!Crunchbang and the #!Forums.

Yeah . . . I like my desktop simple and minimal -- just want the OS to do what "I want" it to do and stay outta my way. I have work to do.

#!Crunchbang / Debian / Openbox does everything I expect of them and more. If I let them.  lol

Yeah, sometimes the more controls you put into something, the less control you feel you have.

Which explains the shortage of KDE users here...

That's my problem with Jolicloud: it runs gnome, but is very hard to configure (since everything is hidden away behind the GUI), I posted on their site that if they're going to make it hard for an average user to configure, they may as well go with a faster DE/window manager (e.g., openbox).  The way it's set up now they've got the worst of both worlds.

My worst nightmare* is having to depend on "the cloud" for my data, so I never really looked at Joliecloud.

* Actually, three biggest fears; 'The Cloud,' bears [largest surviving land omnivore], and Martha Stewart - she's got a Melon-baller!
