using Avahi + Thunar to network browse? [statler]

So here at my flat basically everybody is on a mac, scept for me and my eeepc running statler. I'd like to start sharing files and browsing files and all this, so i figure ah, that'll be bonjour/openconf/avahi. It's installed, the daemon runs as a default, but is there any way to actually use the darn thing? I looked up all kinds of permutations of "thunar and avahi" and "avahi network browsing" both here and on the google to no avail. most responses are best practices for disabling or deleting the thing. how do i frigg'n use it? if i ever got it running, it looks like i can only share ssh shares? is there a way to get folders being shared and the computers sharing them to appear in thunar?

and another less interesting question. i stumbled onto this post in my search
it's about getting simple network browsing across a local home lan or wan working out of the box to enable things like sharing files and browsing files with your family at home.

was this issue ever resolved, and better still, was it resolved in statler? [this would be amazing because i'm running statler and if it was resolved in statler it's resolved for me and that's great news and then i don't have to worry about it ever ever again i hate smbconf]

Re: using Avahi + Thunar to network browse? [statler]

sorry to double post but i want to include this link because it's the first remotely useful thing i've found
http://fedorasolved.org/Members/fenris0 … king-avahi

it's for fedora and says 'yum' alot, and that's nice but i have no idea nor inclination to want to know what that means. it also uses a neat seeming "chkconfig" command that doesn't work in my terminal, so i have no idea if the rest of the things here work and am scared to try them, but i did have a go with

avahi brose -at

which pinged back my machine but none of the macs in my flat
and

avahi-discover

which like the previously mentioned "chkconfig" seemed neat but just didn't work out for me.

yum is the Fedora package manager. The Debian alternative is our beloved apt-get!
As for the chkconfig, I suggest that you just google chkconfig debian and read the top hits from linuxquestions.org
