Thought I would just let anyone interested know I have started a wiki page regarding running #! on the Acer Aspire One. I have only made a basic start so far with enough instructs to get the system fully functional. I intend to add a few other tips and tweaks to the page in the near future so watch this space!
The page can be found at http://crunchbanglinux.org/wiki/howto/aspireone
Thanks

Great stuff! Thank you Bassetts, your contribution to the wiki is really appreciated!

No problem, I may as well document it as I will probably forget most of it myself
Just a note to anyone interested, I have been playing about a bit more on my Aspire One and somethings I will be adding to the wiki are: Volume Keys, Undervolting (not really crunchbang specific), Tweaks to the theme.

Just to let anyone interested know that I have now added some more information to the wiki page. In particular the section on implementing better fan control.
I have a few ideas of more sections to add in the near future but would like feedback from the community as to any information people would like adding.
@corenominal how would you feel about me adding a guide on the wiki of how to upgrade the Aspire One's BIOS based on #!. There are a few tutorials out there but the best one seems to be based on Red Hat based distros and I think its something people could really benefit from.

If it's any help I use these addons in Firefox.
Personal Menu
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3895
Using personal menu you can remove the Google searchbox in the top right easily and add a Bookmarks Icon allowing you to remove the top menu.
Fission
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1951
I also like this addon, its a safari style progress bar integrated into the address bar. Then I remove the status bar.
Gains a little screen space.
(thanks for the wiki by the way, good stuff)

Thanks for the tips, I will check them out when I get time. I am currently working on getting all the hotkeys working properly (mainly volume) and I will post this on the wiki asap. I am thinking of creating a general netbook page with tips on making the interface a bit more efficient and just general tips and info that applies to any make or model of netbook.
As always any suggestions or feedback would be appreciated.

Hi Bassetts... I decided to give #! a try after seeing your post in the AA1 forums. Wow, am I ever glad I did. Thanks for your how to guide. Just thought I would let you know how much I like it.
I still have a few issues but #! is on my system to stay. I didnt have good luck with the card reader fix. Right was never recognized and the left had to manually mounted but was recognized. Since I wasnt sure if it was the sickboy kernel or my mods I am back at the generic ubuntu kernel I see from you above post that you are aware of the sound hotkeys not working quite right.
I think the idea of some user interface tweaks for a netbook would be great. I had to mod xorg.conf and then increase the font a bit in openbox. that way the dialog boxes wernt huge but I could still see.
For those of us on the other side of the atlantic a section on how to change the localization (date formats, units of measure-inches instead of cm, etc) would be helpful. I havent seen it anywhere else and we dont usually have to change that stuff. I selected US keyboard and location at install but for some reason it doesnt appear to have worked.
Thanks for all your hard work. I am a linux USER but not an expert by any means. However, if there is a way I can help you (test stuff, whatever) let me know. Crunchbang rocks on my AA1.

Glad to hear that you are liking CrunchBang, it definitely is suited for netbooks

I messed up with the instructions for the card reader fix and missed out a step. If you go back to the wiki then try out the updated steps and let me know if those work for you
sorry about that. As for the hotkeys they also have a section in the wiki now.

I am going to be adding this soon. Not had as much time as I would like lately and felt that getting the basic info for the Aspire One on the wiki was a priority. I will post here when I have had time to write this up.

Not had this problem myself being from the UK although I have seen a few people asking on IRC. Like anonymous said there is a forum post on this matter that can be found at http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … -language/ if you have any problems with it then feel free to ask for help in there

No problem, always glad to help out. I am by no means an expert at all and most of the wiki was trial and error from other sources, I just wanted to pass it on in an easy to use format so people did not have to spend weeks research like I have
You have already helped out by pointing out the problems you had with the guide and this is all I need right now really. If you just let me know if the updated info works then that would be great

BRILLIANT wiki there bassetts, thanks a bunch!
I remember the macles blog detailed how to get some dithering going on, but that was for linpus I think. I'll look it up again, and see if I can figure out a way. But if anyone else knows the answer, I think it would be a great addition to the wiki.

Hi there, thanks for checking it out
I have had a quick look at the post on macles blog and will investigate when I get a bit more time later. I myself have not have a problem with "banding" so wondered if it is just the xorg driver that comes with Linpus that is affected.
Can anyone else comment on this?
Thanks

This is strange - wireless is not working out of the box for me. This isn't normal, right?
On first boot, it recognized my wifi network, but on subsequent boots it doesn't even do that - no networks found.
I am using Cruncheee... was that a mistake?
Thanks, I can't wait to try this distro. It seems like I have a new OS on this thing every week! #! looks very promising.
EDIT: Looks like it may have taken an actual shutdown instead of a Reboot? It seems to be working now.
EDIT 2:
Just want to update my post with some info on what I have done. As you know, I installed Crunchee instead of the desktop version. I didn't want all the extra apps, and liked the default smaller font size (not that this is an issue, really). The eee logo in the system tray indicated that it was useless, essentially. I can't remember how it phrased it... something about daemons not running and the like. So I decided to remove it completely with the package manager. So far I think I made the right call - nothing seems out of order. Also worth noting is that I followed all the instructions posted here - so I'm on the custom kernel.
I'm still pretty much a Linux noob... really enjoying it though (I'm primarily a Mac user, FWIW).

Thanks Anonymous! and Bassetts. I read the beginning of that post but didnt read all the way through thinking I had the right language installed. I appreciate the help (and not getting flamed for not trying it before posting!). It all works great now.

Hi, glad to hear that you have tried out CrunchBang and that you are enjoying the experience. Wireless worked out of the box for me although I suspect it may be to do with the fact you was using Cruncheee. Much like you I did not want all the extra apps so I installed the lite version then just added on packages that I wanted/needed. I am going to update the wiki with some interface changes to make it a bit more suited to the smaller screen of the Aspire One as well.

re: banding
the more I think about it, I've only seen banding in one place.... so maybe it's a design element
and yeah, reading that post again, it looks like it's a linpus only problem that he's addressing, which suggests most drivers include dithering.
EDIT:
also I noticed that, although it is set to "ask me" in the power settings, the power button just goes ahead and shuts the system down...
EDIT2:
"Go to the line containing ”</keyboard>” (line 396 on the defaul rc.xml) and add the following before it "
shouldn't that be after?

Hi Bassetts,
Great work again. The volume/mute/brightness keys work perfectly.
It might be worth a note in the wiki not to worry about the symbolic links when installing the sickboy kernel. Unless, of course, I should be worried that I dont have them
From my terminal during install:
<snip>
Selecting previously deselected package linux-image-2.6.28-sickboy-kuki.
(Reading database ... 101694 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking linux-image-2.6.28-sickboy-kuki (from linux-image-2.6.28-sickboy-kuki_0.2_i386.deb) ...
Done.
Setting up linux-image-2.6.28-sickboy-kuki (0.2) ...
Hmm. There is a symbolic link /lib/modules/2.6.28-sickboy-kuki/build
However, I can not read it: No such file or directory
Therefore, I am deleting /lib/modules/2.6.28-sickboy-kuki/build
Hmm. The package shipped with a symbolic link /lib/modules/2.6.28-sickboy-kuki/source
However, I can not read the target: No such file or directory
Therefore, I am deleting /lib/modules/2.6.28-sickboy-kuki/source
<end snip>
Donat: The keyboard bindings work great for me. I believe (but no expert so others can weigh in) that </keyboard> is the end of the keyboard section so you add them before that. <keyboard> (no /) is the beginning.

I have not been able to find anything about banding being a problem outside of Linpus so I am thinking it is just the driver provided with Linpus itself.

I have noticed the power setting bug and I am looking at a way of fixing it. I am thinking mapping the power putton in rc.xml although I am not sure that will stop it just shutting the system down. I will look into this further

As long as it goes anywhere between <keyboard> and </keyboard> it should be fine, I just felt it easy to add it to the end of that section

Hi, glad to hear the hotkeys are working fine. I did not even notice them messages myself until the other day when I did a reinstall. I have not encountered any problems so far so I do not think it is anything to worry about and if it was I would think dpkg would make more of a prominent point about it. I will add a little not to the wiki if/when I remember and find time
Has anyone managed to test out the card readers yet as I am still needing some confirmation the updated steps now work.
Thanks for the feedback so far

I should have mentioned in my previous post the card readers are working - both right and left - recognize cards when inserted. They are not automatically mounted when inserted but I prefer that behavior anyway.
Thanks again for the wiki

Thanks for letting me know, a few people have confirmed the card readers to be working fine with the updated instructions so it looks like all the hardware is working fine now

Just for update on Aspire One.
First I just compiled my first kernel with the help of sickboy config using kernelcheck (http://kcheck.sourceforge.net/) and i got a boot of 24 seconds from start button to full desktop.
Did all the tweaks of https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AspireOne110L and sound works great, both card readers work and I got a great system for me!

Good to hear you have your Aspire One working well. I am getting similar boot times from the standard Kuki/Sickboy kernel.
