I kept this extensive list of alternative applications and other programs.
It's mostly based on these threads, and also includes many suggestions done in other threads.
http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … rred-apps/
http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … ps-to-add/
http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … nown-apps/
http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … -programs/
Maybe it should be easily accessible, as a wiki page, and i think it would be nice to add some info for each program:
Default (y/n) Repo (y/n), Dependencies (0/+/+++), cli (y/n), features (-/+/+++), etc
Here's the list anyway...
It's not a linux application list, but a crunchbangers list!
If you still can't find what you're looking for: http://linuxappfinder.com or http://ubuntu-tweak.com/app/
enjoy,
tuna

Here are some additions that came to my mind. It's definitely not an exhaustive list. There are a lot of other great programs out there, some don't even fall under these categories. I can't guarantee the following are all in the repositories. Usually, I just build it myself if I can't find something.

Nice post. I always enjoy learning about new applications out there that may be useful. Hope to see the list continue to grow.

Ah, yes, I was going to suggest DosBox as well
I have a knack for asking dumb questions. Please don't hold it against me - by day I repair Windows machines, I think it's affected my IQ.

For Commodore ROM's, games, or emulator help, feel free to PM me. Also, I have the coveted CD that allows a Thinkpad to use other MiniPCI cards. ;D

If more people are interested we could think of the best place to put this list. I'm OK with editing my first post, but maybe there's a better place to put this.
@lm: i'm glad i'm not the only one who makes this crazy lists....

I think the Crunchbang wiki would be a very good place to put the list. In the meantime, I just added the link to this thread to http://crunchbanglinux.org/wiki/other_apps
Would be nice if we could get it into table format as suggested and possibly add some links to the application's web sites if they're not in the repositories.
@Tunafish: You're definitely not the only one who makes lists of nice applications. Here's one I use at my web site: http://www.distasis.com/cpp/osrclist.htm

Great information here, thanks for the post. Please forgive me but what does the (Cli) stand for that I see so often?
BTW> If you're looking for a graphical way to find apps, Ubuntu Tweak will work in the Openbox and Xfce Statler (with differencing levels of functionality), but it will pull packages out of the Debian repositories, (even if only Debian repos are in use).
Linux Mint's Mintinstall (Software Manager) works in Dreamlinux but I have yet to get it working in Crunchbang Debian (even with the Mint Main repo loaded and pulling in the extra dependencies).

Don't worry. If it's not on this list, you can still use it

cli = command line interface
opposed(?) to gui = graphical user interface

@Tuna - Just to let you know I edited your post and alphabetized the program names. Also I think you should split up "DESKTOP TOOLS" into different categories. Otherwise its a nice list.
Also if this ever transfers to the wiki, I think we should follow Arch's example and have separate pages for the various categories. Just putting everything into one page would be too much IMO.
Note: ** Please read before posting **
BTW if you wish to contact me, send me an e-mail instead of a PM.

I discovered a nice kid-friendly pdf annotator called Xournal. It's actually a note-taking app but it also "edits" pdfs really easy. I even wrote a "tutorial" (my first attempt at such a thing) to introduce it:

I would add remmina http://remmina.sourceforge.net/, which happens to be a consistent VNC/MS-RDP/NX/X pure GTK-based client.

Feed reader --> Canto (CLI). Python based, hackable by editing one single config file. Works well together with CLI browsers. Well documented. Available via Debian repos.
