need help with vlc

i tried upgrading vlc in #! 9.04.01
read through a few posts here in the forums

when i run vlc, media player in menu, nothing happens
when i run vlc in terminal, i get

vlc: error while loading shared libraries: libvlc.so.2: cannot open shared object file: no such file or directory

any thoughts on how to fix what i dug myself into would be great
thanks in advance smile

Re: need help with vlc

Try running "sudo /sbin/ldconfig" and see if you can run VLC then.

Re: need help with vlc

ok, let me try to retrace to what i did

first i followed this thread
http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … ed-in-904/

i entered in terminal "sudo apt-get upgrade vlc"
what happend was it upgraded everything which took some time to download

after that vlc version remained at 0.9*
i was shooting for the latest ver at around 1.1ish

after which i removed the added line from the sources.list
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/freshmedia/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

then i tried this
sudo apt-get remove vlc
sudo apt-get install vlc

then when i select media player nothing happens
typing vlc in terminal, i get the vlc error mentioned above

then i read this thread
http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … ies-error/
changed the preferences in synaptic to jaunty only

this is where i am so far

i read another thread where the guy completely removed all components of vlc
then he did an update and made a fresh install, i'll get to try that later this evening
i'll be happy just to get vlc back and working smile

cheers!

Re: need help with vlc

hi everyone, i got my vlc back working, but its still ver 0.9.9a Grishenko
same version from the fresh install, but i noticed something different

from the fresh install of #!, i could play all the video types i tried
with the reinstallation of vlc, it can still play mp4 video formats but doesn't have sound
never realized what i had when i lost it sad

any ideas how i can get to have sound for mp4s and for all other video file formats?
thanks again

update:
after much trial and error, vlc version is now 1.1.0-git Yellow Bastard, woohoo! big_smile
thank you anonymous for your suggestions here and from the other posts

just to recap, while i had vlc 0.9, upgrading directly to 1.1 gave me dependencies issues
or it wouldn't update while vlc 0.9 was installed. that was where i was always stumped.
to be able to get the 1.1 ver, you just need to remove the existing vlc then install with
jaunty preferred in synaptic. that's, of course, after you've included anonymous' advice to
add the ppa in the source list for the updated vlc.

cheers!

question: how do i change the title of this post to show "[solved]"?
