Hello Forum,
I'm new to #!, but i've been using Ubuntu for a about a year now.
The Specs:
HP Pavilion Laptop dv4-2012la
Problem:
I have no sound whatsoever, an issue i had with ubuntu as well.
The sound isn't muted, and whenever I try to play an audio file, I hear
no sound but it seems like its playing the file.
I'm assuming #! uses Pulseaudio, if that
is the case, that is the problem to this. :S
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

Hi there,
Have you tried
lspcito see, if it's being even detected?
If it is. Try
alsamixerand check all the channels if the volume is at minimum or being mute
btw I think #! does not use Pulse audio (thank goodness)

Yeah I had this problem as well with other distros: open a terminal an launch "alsamixer -Dhw". When into alsamixer, use the key arrows to pump up the volume: generally it is lowed out after a fresh install, also if the mixer guy in the systray says contrary.

Try to uncheck External Amplifier in alsamixer, it worked for me.

i tried the listing command, and detected it...
in the alsamixer:
i only see: master, headphones, pcm, front, iec958, iec958 default pcm, iec958 playback source, iec958 playback source 1 , analog loopback, analog loopback 1 , digital input source, digital input source 1.
which one is the external amplifier?
i also checked in the systray mixer menu and i didnt see an option with the
external amplifier, only the first four options are checked..

In alsamixer (from the terminal) put to 100% all the first four voices; if you get no sound yet, try to set to full the four iec958 sources (altogether with the other you pulled up before).

The first two iec958 sources doesn't change at all, while the other two can only change from digital to analog mux 1/2..

Mmmmmm... This is really strange... If you have sound through headphones, it means your soundcard is correctly detected... So the problem must be related to alsamixer... Did u pull the firts four alsamixer channels in the terminal to full?
What's the default value of your iec958 digital/analog sources? Digital or analog?
What's your sound card?

the master is 95, the other three are at 100...
According to the terminal its Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc Device 970f
and the Sound Properties says its an HDA ATI SB
the first iec958 source says its off and it has a square with two M's. like this [MM]
the second source says [00]
the third and fourth say digital

[MM] means it is turned off... See if you can turn it on. Then put the second source to the maximum and see if you have sound.
If not, try turning the third and fourth to analog. Try messing up with those two: you can't do any damage and if something goes wrong, you can alays restore the default values!

When you highlighted the source that was muted [MM] you did type M to un-mute it, right?

Yeah right you need to press M to unmute it: I didn't remember it (thanks winotree!
). Maybe here we found the problem? Let's hope!

i tried unmuting everything and i played a little with the setting and still nothing...
