Hi, I am writing this for people who are in a situation of not having access to their own wireless network due to a lack of hardware, like I was. I have two computers, one is a Windows XP laptop (with wifi) and an old desktop with #! (no wireless and not near the router). Anyway, it took a little reading and experimenting to share my laptop's wireless connection. Here's how I did it with a crossover cable (I'm not sure if you can use regular ethernet cable).
On XP laptop:
1.Open Control Panel → Network Connections
2.Right Click on Wireless Connection and go to properties
3.Now go to the “Advanced” tab and enable Internet Connection Sharing. (It is the first box, check it).
4.Step 3 will cause your ethernet card to have a static IP of 192.168.0.1 and netmask of 255.255.255.0
On #! PC with no wireless: (You could also do this in terminal)
5.Right Click, then System → Network Admin
6.Once in Network Admin, enter in your password to unlock.
7.Select your ethernet device (wired connection) and then click on Properties.
8.Disable Roaming and you can either set it to DHCP or set your own static IP.
To set static IP:
1.Set IP to 192.168.0.X (replace X with desired number)
2.Set netmask as 255.255.255.0
3.Default Gateway should be the same as ethernet card IP from XP laptop, which is 192.168.0.1That's it, you're done. It should work. You may need to restart the computers. Hope this helps.
