CrunchBang 10 "Statler" Alpha 1 Released

The first alpha of CrunchBang 10 "Statler" is now available. Download it at your own risk! big_smile

If you do decide to give it a try, please do not forget to provide feedback. Your comments and suggestions are really important to the future development of the project, so please warm-up your digits and get ready to type-up your notes.

For anyone who might be interested, I have written up some release notes on the wiki. Apologies about the lack of details, but this is a new start to the project and I am not sure I could reasonably detail every change.

P.S. Please do not break the new download servers. Captain Link Hogthrob, Dr. Julius Strangepork & First Mate Piggy are all new to the job, so take it easy on them! smile

yikes

YYYYYEESSSS! big_smile big_smile

Also, i noticed XFCE and Openbox are split ISOs right now... I assume that'll change for launch?
For now, i suppose i will try the XFCE first.
Final Edit: I'm about 3/4ths done the download, and I'd just like to let you know, i've been getting fully saturated download speed (about 500kbps).

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" Alpha 1 Released

Thank you, Sir Corenominal!!

I just started the download for the i686 Openbox version, but I'd like to know if it works as a Live-USB? (Unetbootin).
Reason I'm asking is because I'd like to test it out on my netbook.

I'll try the version with openbox first to be more accustomed to it. big_smile

Reason I'm asking is because I'd like to test it out on my netbook.

I can answer that. I assume all will, but i personally used the 64bit xfce version.
Used Unetbootin for windows, and just specified the iso, and no problems at all.

I actually came back onto the board to praise the LiveCD SO MUCH.
I reboot, select to boot from USB, get a nice text menu asking what I want to do, just select generic LiveCD, and within a second, perhaps two, i was at a completely usable desktop. And before i swear, as soon as I saw a desktop, there was also a notification that wireless networks were in range, on a card I've had trouble getting any wireless with at all (on Ubuntu 9.10).

So i am very very happy so far. Put it my wireless password, and browser was up in a split second.
So far, the application choice seem very lite, and the overall feel to me is like crunchbang has always been.

Only complaint, it seems my keyboard is in GB settings, im not sure how to change it. And until I do, i can only write £! lol.

Still, GREAT work philip!!!!! AWESOME.

I'm pretty gutsy, i must admit, using a 64bit install, the xfce edition, and actually installing it, not using virtualbox tongue

But so far, so AWESOME! Haha.

EDIT: spent two seconds and figured out how to change the keyboard.

For anyone interested:
in XFCE anyways, you right click -> Settings -> Keyboard -> Layout and uncheck use system default, then add a new layout and optionally delete the gb layout. #! is all good now big_smile

To me, the xfce version, i'd swear was regular crunchbang if not for the slightly different looking menu (icons mostly).

@corenominal
Thanks big_smile

@blackbinary
Thanks for the input. smile
I'm a bit skeptical about my blasted broadcom wireless (why can't netbooks just come with Intel wifi, it'll only be like $5 extra... ugh).
I'll probably only get around to installing it tomorrow though, since it's already past 4am where I'm at and work starts in 6 hrs for me.

Edit:
5 minutes remaining till download completes big_smile

@corenominal, I would say just that and I'd put the blame on the fact that I was an inhabitant of the third world - I'm not a thundercat - but it seems that the problem is broader lol

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" Alpha 1 Released

Looking forward to trying this, always thought #! would be better based on debian! Can't decide to give the openbox or xfce version a go first though? Any screenshots of either versions? Also I reckon these will be downloaded a lot, making torrents might not be a bad idea as it'll take a bit of the load off the servers.

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" Alpha 1 Released

First roadblock, the instructions you gave to install to HDD from usb, they do not work for me.
Specifically here: http://crunchbanglinux.org/wiki/statler … stallation at the bottom of the page.

The install goes as such:
I select 'Text Install' option, it loads some stuff, then i get a menu of what to do. I select my language, then keyboard map, then it trys to read the CDROM. Says there is none, and throws me back to the menu. There is no where to tell it not to Load CDROM drivers, or any of the steps you mentioned sad. I also tried 'Text Expert' but that didn't have the option either.

Re: CrunchBang 10 "Statler" Alpha 1 Released

I'll give feedback of the 64 bits version big_smile
Keep up the good work!

One question though, is the i486 version for old processors? Like intel celeron? Which means, that it would be the perfect version for tge eepc 701?

try adding cdrom-detect/try-usb=true to the boot line when it starts up, I've had to do that for some debian based distros in the past.

It's looking really good Core, only issue I'm having is the display settings aren't detecting my second monitor. I can just use xrandr whenever I end up installing though. The recent discussions about ubuntu not being a democracy have finally nudged me over to switch to debian. Need to wait until my finals are over though just in case.

I really like the #! powered by debian wallpaper also.

As of today, we've got a faster dsl at home... Downloading atm at 740/kb/sec... Openbox-Statler in like 13-15 min... big_smile lol cool

Had a frustrating afternoon, first trying to get archbang to run on my eee, then trying to crunchify Lubuntu Alpha3 on eee. So this come absolutely right in time!
