[Solved] USB persistant installation

Just to give a bit of background: I got a CD of this a few days ago, and have it installed on one of my spare desktops (chiefly used for testing, and to familiarize myself with new distros, before I switch out my primary OS for it).  I decided that it would be nice to be able to use this on a regular basis on my primary machine, but I didn't want to re-partition my hard drive, and it would also be nice to have a copy with me (I keep my liveCDs in a bookcase along the wall, not with me).  So, I decided that it would be best to have a USB installation of this OS, and found this tutorial on making one:  http://www.pendrivelinux.com/crunchbang … ll-via-cd/

I followed the instructions, with nothing done manually except a few mounts and umounts where appropriate.  When I try to boot with this, I get an error saying that there was trouble enumerating the USB device.  It give a couple more messages, something like assuming drive cache, write through, and then drops to the busybox shell, ash.  I can't figure out where this went wrong.

I would like to note that this flash drive has given me trouble before (Kingston 'Data Traveler' 4GB), and in order to get Ubuntu live installed on it, I had to manually install an mbr, and use the Ubuntu graphical utility (Standard Ubuntu is currently what's running on my primary machine).  Since I was able to get Ubuntu 8.10 installed on this earlier, and this is based on Ubuntu, I have to imagine that there is a way to get this to work.  The graphical installer for Ubuntu on USB would not let me use the CrunchBang .iso image, or I would have just used that.

If anyone has any idea how to solve this, it would be greatly appreciated.

(No, I didn't make that, but it holds true, so I use it in my sig)

Be excellent to each other!

Re: [Solved] USB persistant installation

UPDATE: I got this working on another flash drive, with the exact same process, so the error was in the flash drive, not in any tutorial or system anyone here was working on.  So, even though it doesn't fix the problem posted initially, I'm not going to post any more about it.

Although I am still curious why Ubuntu worked...
