What kind of programs are you downloading?!
Most everything you'll need is in Synaptic, which is System >> Package Manager in the #! Openbox menu.

Synaptic (and apt-get and aptitude from the CLI) downloads everything you need, including any dependencies you may not already have that might not be in the tarball you downloaded.

1. Before you try installing programs, remember to run "sudo apt-get update" or click the Reload button in Synaptic.
2. Gimpshop and Gimphoto are based on older versions of Gimp, so if you prefer the newest versions you may not want them.

for this you can download the *.deb file and open it with Gdebi or with the command dpkg -i name_of_the.deb
Not sure if your firefox opens .deb files with Gdebi by default.
It is recommended to install software from the package manager. They are maintained and are usually fitting your distribution best.

you can do it in the terminal:
go to the directory where your *.deb file is
enter the command:
dpkg -i <name-of-the-program>.debit installs it and you can start it by entering the name of the program (no idea what it is), possibly gimphoto

If firefox (i suppose it is your browser) doesn't open the .deb file by clicking on it, you can go open Firefox -> Edit -> Preferences -> Applications tab -> search for Content type 'file' -> Action: click on the little arrow -> Use other... -> browse to the directory /usr/bin/ and click on pcmanfm. Then click "Open". Close the Preferences window. Firefox now uses PcManFM to open links in firefox.
Downloads are usually located in /home/<USER>/downloads
in firefox you can click on Tools -> Downloads -> Right-click on the entry in the little window (Open Folder/ Open File)

in the case they are in a download folder, you open the terminal, and enter:
cd downloads
dirthis brings you to the downloads directory and shows its content
there you can apply the command dpkg -i <name>.deb

Ok, open firefox, go to "Tools" -> "Downloads"
Right-click on the entry with gimphoto
Choose "Open containing folder"
It will open a Filemanager. There you double-click on the program you downloaded.
Edit: Okay, if it is not in there, go to the website to download the file again

After clicking open containing folder, and it asks about the file, first go to /usr/bin/ and select pcmanfm
If this doesn't help you'll just have to open PCManFM and manually browse to the folder where you downloaded the file.

This is the problem with firefox. It doesn't know how to open the files you downloaded, that's why it has to be associated with PcManFM:
1) open Firefox
2) click on "Edit"
3) click on "Preferences"
4) go to the "Applications" tab
5) search for the Content type 'file'
6) right of it there it says "Always ask". Click on the little arrow and choose "Use other..."
7) Click on the File System icon, so that you are in folder "/"
Click on the folder "/usr"
9) Click on the folder "/bin"
10) search for a file named "pcmanfm", double-click it
11) Now you can close the Application window and from this moment on Firefox will work well with .debs

hehe
you have to add it manually to your OpenBox menu. you can start it from the terminal
just enter the name of the program (i think it is gimphoto or so)
if it works, come back again and we add it to your menu.
