"Obsidian" is such a cool and clever name -  but it could still be a Stable release.

Maybe like cars - the basic family saloon version is Obsidian, and the sports edition for the petrol-heads: ObsidianSE or ObsidianGTX big_smile

(I recently built a cb-based iso for someone called Hugh. Naturally it had to be called "Hunix" smile )

I have been liking Obsidian from the start and not because of it's Sid connotation. As I posted earlier, it also has the implication that's it's not vanilla debian. Black & White.

Plus, @Damo, having seen your work in Blender, I am pretty sure you could come up with some cool stuff based off of that. Obsidian is black glass after all.

Re: The End ... The Beginning ... And THE NEW NAME

What about simply calling it "Phoenix" as in the mythical bird who rose from the ashes...

I don't mean to sound disrespectful or unappreciative to our former developer but it seems to me, the logo and name should remain. It feels all a tad childish and silly for him to disassociate himself from this long standing community, while demanding we find alternative names for it's successor. CrunchBang after all, owed it's popularity to the friendly and active participation of it's community as it did too it's developer.

It rather sounds akin to during the Summer of 1839, Abner Doubleday decides he doesn't want to play with his Lads anymore... grabs his glove, ball, bat and heads home telling the rest, you can't call it Baseball anymore.

Somehow, Batball just wouldn't have worked.

"Let me explain something to you. Um, I am not "Mr. Lebowski". You're Mr. Lebowski. I'm the Dude. So that's what you call me. You know, that or, uh, His Dudeness, or uh, Duder, or El Duderino if you're not into the whole brevity thing."

The Dude.

Comeback isn't bad.

What about Kickback? monkey

I think we already have a strong front runner (and it ain't Sparklehorse), but keep the ideas coming!

DDR = Deutsche Demokratische Republik. That should really be avoided!

I like the +1! or +! approaches or !+. It stands for the brevity and simplicity, more like Obsidian. That sounds quite fat. wink

its just my view based on the conversation that went on in the other thread

I like comeback the best because if corenominal ever sees it then it may transmit some kind of subliminal message as a sonar into his subconscious thoughts and we get the official crunchbang back

this just seems all over the place to me
we are leaderless

Re: The End ... The Beginning ... And THE NEW NAME

^
Let's call it: Muntzx

I like the fact, that the guy was the apostle of minimalism in electronics, so we can build a cult around him (like Tesla, but different purpose). When it comes to naming the system, the "keep it simple" approach that Muntz himself would follow dictates that we should not "over-engineer" the whole thing, but simply put the -x ending of Unix and Linux after the surname instead, creating an odd-sounded, yet easily recognizable and unique word that tells you exactly what it is and nothing more.

Phoen!x is okay, but the more 3L337 h4x0r the name is, the less potential users will find it serious IMHO...

Freenix is already a thing. http://sourceforge.net/projects/freenix/

Phoenix is a LUG (and also close word-wise to Phoronix)

True! It should by no means be confused with another existing distro or IT-company, etc.
