"Obsidian" is such a cool and clever name - but it could still be a Stable release.
Maybe like cars - the basic family saloon version is Obsidian, and the sports edition for the petrol-heads: ObsidianSE or ObsidianGTX
(I recently built a cb-based iso for someone called Hugh. Naturally it had to be called "Hunix"
)

stable independent distro
I just found out obsidian is glass and surgeons use it for cutting us up
minecraft paints a completely different picture of it
what about obsidianix or obsidianite for the special editions?

Whatever you choose you should ask whether it passes "the hat test" if it is worthy of #! succession
Kind of very important indeed. How childish it may sound, one of the reasons to use CrunchBang is because both the name and the logo are so damn cool. Telling someone my OS is CrunchBang always makes me smile a bit
It's not a nerdish name, it's not a name with a vague meaning to it, everybody immediately goes "err what? CrunchBang? wth is that? I want that too!". Obsidian, although not a bad name, would make people go "oh, never heard of" and move on.
As a working title it may be OK, but I think a better name is needed. One which refers to (and sounds as cool as) CrunchBang, possibly using the same logo, and doesn't refer to a technology/product used, as that limits your options in the future.

If this is the beginning, the name could be.... BigBang

DeuterOS
"deuteros" means the second one in ancient Greek. If Crunchbang is the first (protos), then its derivative has something do do with deuteros. It suggests something new and up-to-date, the opposite of prototype. Not to mention that deuterium is a cooler variety of hydrogen. Heavy water (deuterium oxyde) saves nuclear power plants from going Crunch-Bang... Logo should depict deuterium's atomic structure. But the new system UT-ilises DE-bian packages. Of course, the -OS ending naturally refers to Operating System. The name does not contain any software specific reference other than Debian, so it won't be a problem to release for example Fluxbox version or Stable/Testing/Sid based editions.

You can keep using #! as your logo if you want (no matter what you call your distro); Phillip doesn't own it.

If we can still use "#!", then the new name is WaffleSausage
Offline
if we call it comeback then we dont need to change the names of all of the cb-* scripts or any references to them

will the codenames be greek?
That would be cool. The one based on Sid can be called Σίδηρος (iron, Fe) and other releases can use greek names of other chemical elements.

We had/have CrunchBang or #!
We have ArchBang or ^!
So how about KISSBang or X!
I know KISS* is an Arch thing but they did borrow the "Bang", so time to repay the favour.
Like CrunchBang_#! it both sounds and looks cool, and like #! the name does not restrict either base distro or desktop environment.
As long as it KISS, it's all good.

And the icon from my Crunchmaster remastering package may be appropriate

ComeBack = not bad, but after a couple of years it becomes obsolete. It should be the first release code name of the new distro, as a tribute to CrunchBang. Like: [chosen name] Linux 15.10 "ComeBack".
X! (capital X looks better than x, and if KISS is written with all capitals, it should not be lower case either) = not bad, but "kissbang" again makes me think of gangbang. I know, that's probably only me, but still.
!++ = for me it's a no, no. First, it's not only written in C++, second how to pronounce it, how to register a domain for it, etc. One of my earlier suggestions was +1 Linux or +1! Linux, that could at least be registered at plusonelinux.org or something like that.
