[SOLVED] X crash/freeze on newly installed box

First off, paleez pardon my French!

I've been experiencing constant/random crash/freeze on a newly installed #!-11 (Waldorf) which involve the following items :

  • M/B = ASUS P8P67 REV 3.1 (latest bios)

  • GPU = ASUS GeForce 7900 GS

  • virtualbox - 4.3.18r96516

I'm running the same config as my old box, we have custom hardware and notable difference with my new box would be the mainboard (ASUS PK5 PRO, bios not updated); I've transfered the GPU to the new box and have more RAM (which was the reason I've upgraded) but it looks like when I start a VBox machine - running Ubuntu 14.10 - it mess with the nouveau driver to ultimately freeze the desktop. The mouse still can move around but I can't access other VTs, then again I can SSH to the box and find this  (see first attachment - https://gist.github.com/ionreflex/83c82 … 41114-log).

Yesterday morning I've decided to change the GPU for an ASUS GeForce 8800 GT (thinking it could be the culprit, I've found some 3-years-old reports on the web of problems similar to mine) but I had a crash again (see second attachment - https://gist.github.com/ionreflex/83c82 … 41117-log).

While collecting info to report this, I've been trying to crash my deck again, but as always per Murphy's law it won't have it (see third you-know-what - https://gist.github.com/ionreflex/83c82 … 41118-log)!

I should probably report this but I'm not sure to whom, maybe there are tweaks I don't think of, any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all

this.
can also happen with games etc.
you should use the proprietary nvidia driver if you want to use virtualbox' hardware accel features (and believe me, you want to).

Re: [SOLVED] X crash/freeze on newly installed box

... I had the NVIDIA driver installed via 'smxi', cannot recall what the problem was - in the past few weeks I've built so much deck I have trouble remembering! I'll give it a try with the new GPU, see how it goes...

Thanks

Re: [SOLVED] X crash/freeze on newly installed box

I don't know if the culprit was the ASUS GeForce 7900 GS, but NVIDIA driver installed via 'smxi' for the 8800 GT seems to work like a charm! I'll mark this post as "SOLVED" and hopefully it will stay that way...

Thanks alot for the input @ohnonot
