Am I missing something here, or doesn't Pidgin already do this for you? You can just add a Google Talk account under Accounts. I know that this is essentially equivalent as the XMPP protocol is used either way, but this seems redundant. I think I had to do this back in Gutsy? Maybe.

I figured out for the first time how to do this last week whle i was in Mint. The page i found wasn't half as helpful as the google link above, i wish i found that thread last week. I've never seen a 'google talk' option in Pidgin on any distro - I will look out for such an option.

That confused me when using Pidgin. I added a Google Talk account, and then it automatically changed to XMPP. I was like WTF?

Indeed it works. I don't know why but here I have to configure the advanced settings. So for me the steps are:
1 Add Google Talk account - add username - rest of options on 'Basic' tab optional.
2 On 'Advanced' tab:
Force Old port 5223 SSL: checked
Connect port: 5223
Connect server: talk.google.com
Note 'Require SSL/TLS' is optional and from the Google link it seems like if you have a Google Mail account (example@googlemail.com) you should have googlemail.com instead of gmail.com for the domain.
