Hello everyone,
Personally I've played around with a few distros in the past. My first experience with linux in general was Puppy Linux that I live booted from a USB on an ancient laptop with a fried hard-drive.
Over the last couple of years I've tried a few others such as Ubuntu, Mint, Zorin OS, etc. But I've always went back to Windows in the end. I've been using Windows for as long as I can remember (and I mean that literally. The first computer my family got when I was little ran windows 95.
).
I've recently started learning to program (I'm learning Python) and I wanted to set up a stable system that I could use as a programming machine. So I pulled out one of my old towers, found a hard drive that still works to stick in it and started looking for a distro to put on it.
I tried Zorin and Mint first, but Zorin ran too slowly and I didn't really like the feel of Mint.
I should mention that this old PC has a single core AMD CPU and 1gb of ram, so I need something lite to run on it. After a little googling I found a page that mentioned Crunchbang. I started looking into it and I liked what I saw, so I decided to give it a shot and wow.
Even with the ancient hardware I'm running it on, Crunchbang still manages to feel snappy and very responsive. Although it seems a tad intimidating when first getting started with it, I think #! is exactly what I've been looking for.
The active community is a big plus as well!
