New to #!

Recently I was at work piddling around in Windows 8, because that is what the overlords have designated, and I decided that I needed to create a new virtual box. Always in the past I have turned to Fedora/KDE and I knew that just wasn't going to work on my setup there so I needed to find something light. That's when I came across #!. This OS looked sweet and I have spent the last few days using it a bunch!

So I pose the question, what brought the rest of you to #!?

Re: New to #!

Started using Linux last June with Ubuntu 12.04. Upgrading to 12.10 in October didn't work out and so I looked for something new. Initially CrunchBang was for an old PC that can't cope with a regular bloated distro like Ubuntu, Fedora, Mageia or openSUSE. However, I liked it so much that I installed it on my main PC. It's light and it looks nice. People who say it looks dark would probably say a canvas is white.

Re: New to #!

First and foremost, welcome to the Crunchbang family.  I spent a lot of time in the "Debian minimal" world, and started to play with #! as it was similar to my OB/T2 option for Debby.  I was really impressed that rather than trying to automate everything, that it simply led the user to the locations of the files that they needed to learn to configure everything.  I strongly recommend it to users coming out of the _buntu (baby's first Linux), as it will be a huge help in taking off the training wheels until they get used to file locations and such.  The real greatness of it is that even though I think it's a great learning tool, it's also a very fully featured distribution.  It can be as simple or as complex as your needs dictate.

Re: New to #!

Not having to keep on installing non-free from the Debian repos made it an easier install on my machines, it does what I need straight away.

1. Debian or Debian-based only for me
2. Lightweight
3. Works well "out of the box"
4. Not loaded with loads of apps I do not want or need
5. Nice post install script to install commonly used apps so no need to unstall by default
6. Community Community Community!

Re: New to #!

Most of the aforementioned, and the lack of any gui control centres and gui tools and it's insistance on configuring everything via text files, the good old Slackware way I have become used to and which is also prevalent in Debian proper.

IMO Zenwalk went downhill when they introduced their own control panel. It seemed a fashion for a while for newer and niche distributions all to come up with a control panel of their own, seemingly to distinguish themselves and justify their existence. #! is a refreshing change from this.

Say no to bugs. - It's not a bug, it's a worm.

Control panels/GUIs are for checkouts.

Re: New to #!

Wow! Thanks for the amazing responses and the welcome! I have to agree that I really like the lack of focus on a gui. That is a big selling point for me as everything seems to be shifting away from that.

Also, I'd like to note that the wealth of knowledge and tutorials I have already ran across on this site are incredible. So thanks for that as well! ^_^
