I'm currently trying to set up an old desktop that I hacked together from various legacy machines to work the way I want it to.
It currently has three hard drives in it:
75GB IDE hard drive (probably 5400 RPM)
16GB Seagate Cheetah SCSI 10000 RPM hard drive
16GB Seagate Cheetah SCSI 10000 RPM hard drive (another one)
The IDE hard drive is connected by a typical IDE ribbon cable to the IDE controller on the motherboard, and works perfectly. I currently have Windows 98SE (for my retro gaming) dual booting with #! 10 Statler on it.
Here's where it get's tricky...
Both SCSI hard drives are hooked up on one SCSI ribbon cable to an Adaptec 29160 SCSI controller card which is connected to a PCI slot on the motherboard.
When the computer boots up I can hear the hard drives spooling up so I know they're working, but I don't see them in GParted, and basically are as if they are weren't there. Seeing as SCSI drives are a largely antiquated technology, the only things I can find in a search engine are old forum threads and tutorials from the 90's which are largely unhelpful. My searches over the past few days have been for naught.
Here's what I'm aiming for: I want to install #!Crunchbang on one of these SCSI hard drives, OpenBSD on the other, and keep Windows98SE on the IDE drive along with a large data partition to be mounted as the home partition for the #! install.
I'm pretty much in over my head, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
Here's what I've gathered so far:
The IDE hard drive's jumpers set it as the master drive
The SCSI drives have no jumper (which is supposed to be "cable select" IIRC)
The SCSI cable is properly terminated
I've tried loading the "scsi_mod", "sg_mod", "sg", and "aic7xxx" kernel modules and refreshing the devices list in GParted to no avail
This is going to be way harder than I initially thought
And to get a grasp of the hardware I'm working with, this is a seriously retro machine:
Pentium 4 2.0 GH/z (single core!)
512mb RAM (128mb X4)
Random old NVidia AGP 8X graphics card
And of course the hard drives themselves are really old too!
Any help would be appriciated! I'm sure I'll be on my own with regard to getting OpenBSD on the second SCSI drive, but I could also use some advice on getting GRUB to boot four different operating systems across three hard drives, which will be my next challenge after I get this working.
Thanks in advance!
EDIT: I solved the problem! It was simply a conflict of the SCSI IDs on the hard drives. Changing the SCSI ID by moving the jumpers fixed the problem.

Any trace of the scsi drives in the dmesg output?
Post output of

If I am reading this correctly, the last 4 lines are for your card reader(s):

I suspect that either the Adaptec controller or one/both the devices attached to it is not connected properly.

I do indeed have a card reader, so that explains that.
I'm not certain how to tell if I have the drives connected properly. I mean, I have both drives on the ribbon cable, and one of the drinves is connected from the end of the cable (thus properly terminating the cable). The ribbon cable is then firmly connected to the internal SCSI port on the controller card, which is firmly connected to the PCI slot on the motherboard.
It's a 64 bit PCI card, but it's supposed to be backward compatable with a 32 bit PCI slot, albiet with somewhat slower speed, so it should work. I'll double check my connections and see what I find.
Could it also be my jumper settings? If I interpreted the sticker on the drives correctly, no jumper should be the "cable select" mode. Is that correct? Or is there no "cable select" for SCSI drives and I misinterpreted it?

Is it not the SCSI ID on the drives that is more important than the cable order?

Ok, so I went into the Adaptec "SCSISelect" utility (the SCSI BIOS, essentially) and noticed that it only detected the controller card itself (SCSI ID was 7 as is typical), and not the hard drives. I double checked the connections. The hard drives are properly connected to the cable, which is properly connected to the controller card, which is properly connected to the motherboard. I also inspected the cable itself for any damage, there was no damage neither to the wires themselves nor the pins on the connectors. And yet, when the SCSISelect utility scans for SCSI devices, it doesn't find anything assigned SCSI ID 1-5, times out scannng ID 6 (one of the hard drives?), finds the controller card itself assigned to ID 7, and times out searching every SCSI ID after that, all the way to 15.
I am out of ideas. I doubt the hard drives themselves are faulty, because the computers I salvaged them from didn't have hard drive issues. I could try a different cable, but it was working with the computer I took it from too. I tried the other internal SCSI port on the controller card, which didn't work either. I know the hard drives are turning on, because I hear them spool up when I turn on the computer.
I'm still reading the various Adaptec documentation, which is greatfully vast (linux is officially supported) and I may find answers there.
Any other ideas?
EDIT: I just tried disconnecting one of the drives, and upon scanning for SCSI drives in the SCSISelect utility, it detected it! I'm formatting it now, since I'm going to install another OS on it anyways, but then I'll connect just the other one and see if it works too. If so, then it could be a conflicting SCSI ID? This is my first experience with SCSI drives, so I'm not sure. If not, then it's obviously faulty. Eventually I'll get around to seeing if it's detected in Linux, and will let me install to it.
EDIT: Ok, so both hard drives will work individually, but not both together. Either one works perfectly! I noticed that whichever one was connected, it was assigned the SCSI ID of 6. That led me to believe it was an SCSI ID conflict, which explains everything.
So now, my problem is, how do I move the jumpers to reassign the SCSI ID? They are Seagate Cheetah ST318406LW 17 GB 10000 RPM hard drives. This is an older model which is no longer listed on Seagate's website, not even in their support section. I've tried searching for documentation on the internet, but no luck so far. I'll maybe call Seagate tomorrow, but I doubt they'll help.
Would it hurt the drive to randomly move the jumpers to try and change the ID? I don't think I'd fry it by using an incorrect jumper setting.
EDIT: Fixed! I just randomly moved the jumpers until I changed it to the SCSI ID I wanted, with the controller card being ID 7, and the hard drives being IDs 6 and 5. It worked! Thanks for all your help!

It's all about the IDs or the termination. Enjoy your old-school storage.
