fresh new (wanna be) user

Hello All

I'm doing Blender, currently on macPro,
I'm also using on Ubuntu machine for terminal rendering purpose.
The linux machine has i7 with 6Gb ram, Nvidia card and 2x 2Tb Hdd.

First question, can blender run on Crunchbang ?

for the last few ours, i'm trying to install Crunchbang but installation freezes after the language/country windows.
I noticed that the 64bit file i've downloaded got AMD at his name, is this a problem ?
(crunchbang-10-20120207-amd64)

Live version is running good, problem just while trying to install.
I really want to check Crunchbang, any ideas ?

Blender will work in #!. If you want the most recent version you should use Waldorf. Wally will maybe work better with your machine too. It is not the recommended version yet by corenominal et al, but as more knowledgeable others than me suggest, once Wheezy is frozen there is no point in using Statler. Waldorf is amaaazing.

Hi banger

I'm as new as the winter here, until now i used ubuntu just for terminal render, i even don't know how to install the new blender.
do you, or any body else, works with blender on #! ?

i'll read Debian links you sent, but boy, so many linux systems, how do you choose ?

You've made the right choice already. If you want the newest blender use Waldorf.

To install Blender:

sudo apt-get install blender

Problem is that it wouldn't gives me last version of blender.
When download from blender.org, i get folder with all kind of files, none of them installation file.

You need to use Waldorf, or track Statler apt sources to backports to get the most recent. Already said it twice.

it gave me 2.49b version, last one is 2.65, i'll read and look for solution,

I'd just forget backports though and go straight to Waldorf. Statler is dying.

I'm by no means a 3D guy, not even 2D ... hehe ... but you just made the right choice in terms of performance (both, CPU and GPU) as #! does not flock around with useless eye-candy. This is where you get your machines's performance down to the knitty gritty. Me say: this distro is fast!

P.S.: and yes, this is Debain Linux with an attitude - of course it runs Blender!

thanx, VastOne,
no doubt it is the most interesting os i bumped into, it is challenging, nothing is expected.
and i have to ask:
I tried to install #! on my pc and it didn't worked out, none of the versions.
installation freezes after the language/country windows. so for now it runs on virtualBox on my mac.
Any ideas how to check my pc for #! installation ? [i7, 6Gb, Nvidia]

hallo again,

got a question, i couldn't install #! on my pc, so i started from the disk and #! work fine.
now i want to format the hard drive while working from the cd, and then restart and try to install again.
1. how can i find a disk utility software (or any other software installed) ?
2. can you help me with the terminal code for HDD formatting and installing fresh #!  ?

hi Erezb1,
welcome to the community!

to (re-)partition/format your HDD, once you boot into the live cd, just right click on the empty desktop to bring up the openbox menu then select System->GParted...it is a GUI tools. Before doing anything on your hard disk, read some guide, for example this, GParted manual and, why not, others guides you may find...

for troubleshooting your problem with the install, when it hangs, hit Ctrl+Alt+F4, it will drop you to a console of which you can take a picture to be posted here...I am no expert but someone else might see something useful to guide you...
