How To apt-fast in #!

Well, I have used a script called "apt-fast" in Ubuntu before without a hitch. It's a apt download-accelerator that uses aria2c or axel to speed up apt downloads. There were some problems, couldn't use the PPA and the installation was a hassle, here's how I got it done (with help from  VastOne and brontosaurusrex on the IRC channel :P )

1. Install axel with "sudo apt-get install axel"

2.Install apt-fast from here, use the "natty" version and make sure it's appropriate for your archetecture (i386 or x86_64) http://ppa.launchpad.net/apt-fast/stabl … /apt-fast/

3. Install using the standard Gdebi installer, a window will pop-up like this: http://imgbin.org/images/9976.png

4. Just exit the box, it'll finish installing apt-fast and in the terminal it'll ask for the config settings

5. For "Maximum connections" I recommend like 5-8 connections, for the rest of the options, just press Enter.

6. You're done! Try it by replacing "apt-get" with "apt-fast" Ex. "sudo apt-fast install google-chrome"

(Thanks to VastOne and brontosaurusrex)

Good work, CrunchbangPC, and welcome to CrunchBang!  But I could've sworn there was a similar utility from Debian proper?

Re: How To apt-fast in #!

Isn't there a utility that selects the fastest repo mirrors and downloads from multiple mirrors simultaneously?

Isn't that what this does?

Re: How To apt-fast in #!

I'm admittedly not familiar with the apt-p2p or the mirror select, sorry. It just grabs it like apt, but with axel for faster downloading... hmm

Re: How To apt-fast in #!

Hmmm...had a look at the package description for axel...sounds like apt-fast could possibly be simulated with a very small shell script?

Re: How To apt-fast in #!

apt-fast is a shell script, and a dang good one, see here:

Re: How To apt-fast in #!

Nice tip.

I'm using apt-fast and axel (axel is my default cli downloader) for a few years.
Since last year I'm using apt-fast with aria2.

These lines are the first thing I add in my .bashrc after the installation of my "favorite tools":

alias aguu='sudo apt-fast update && sudo apt-fast upgrade'
alias agu='sudo apt-fast update'
alias agi='sudo apt-fast install'
alias agui='sudo apt-fast update && sudo apt-fast install'

Re: How To apt-fast in #!

^ Any specific reason why aria2 over axel now?

Not really. Was an option in apt-fast configuration and I like the output.

Axel is more handy for my iso downloads and very light.
Aria2 can handle a variety of formats (e.g torrents) beyond a download link but is heavier.
