Torrent client

Transmission is a nice torrent client, but its stil does not have magnetic link support. I just wondered, if it would be reasonable to replace it as standart torrent client with flush or other client from testing branch, which do support magnetic links?

Re: Torrent client

Transmission does support magnet links.  Copy the link and paste it in File >> Add URL.

Re: Torrent client

people go on about deluge being great, but I have been able to use transmission for everthing, including magnetic links. I think its more the process of opening the file rather than transmission itself. A magnet is just a link to a torrent really, right?

Re: Torrent client

A magnet link is a more decentralized way to distribute a torrent, that doesn't involve people connecting to a tracker to obtain a list of peers. Rather, it finds peers through comparing cryptographic hash values. Usually this involves DHT, but there are ways of using magnet links without DHT. Personally, I'm not a fan of random people that don't even use the same tracker as me being able upload and download data to and from my machines. But, for those that do want this functionality for privacy or fear of the government knocking on their door, transmission has it. Rtorrent also supports magnet links in versions => 0.8.9.

Re: Torrent client

I recommend for rtorrent or qbittorrent. Both support magnet links.

Re: Torrent client

I don't even use torrents anymore, unless its software etc., from known suppliers (i.e. #! waldorf download)

For films, tv, etc., I use xbmc which seems to have far greater range and far quicker releases of material smile

Re: Torrent client

once you use rtorrent, you won't want to go back to anything else. It's one of the killer applications on *nix.

Re: Torrent client

rtorrent is always one of the first things I install on a new system. Though these days I use it and Transmission interchangeably depending on my mood. Then again I don't use magnet links or the Pirate Bay...
