Ransomware...How well are we protected?

Just saw a report on the evening news about ransomware...something that I was not aware even existed until now.  Got me to wondering...are we, Linux users, better protected against such attacks than Windows users?  And if so, how much more protection can we expect?

The victim in the news story was a small business operator who's business server was infected with ransomware, locking him out of his customer and vendor data.  He said the cost of the ransom would have been less than the cost in time and money he was out taking the course he had chosen, which was to NOT pay the ransom.

This is just another thing that I'm a little worried about, and want someone to assure me I don't need to be worried.

Don't install an unkonwn deb from a shady source and you're as safe as can be.

^ Agreed.

From an open-source perspective, I'd be a little more worried about the other kind of ransomware, i.e. "street performer protocol".

Look at //etc/apt/sources.list
Google unfamiliar addresses.
