xfce4 panel

I was doing an update/upgrade today when I noticed one of the packages that was being installed during the upgrade was xfce4-panel. Why does this need to be upgraded? The default panel in #! is and has long been tint2. So why is xfce4 panel even installed?

Re: xfce4 panel

It's one of Thunar's dependencies.

Re: xfce4 panel

^^ It's a dependency of xfce4-mixer

~$ sudo apt-get purge xfce4-panel -s
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  xfce4-mixer* xfce4-panel*

Re: xfce4 panel

Thanks guys,

Dependacy hell as usual. Making you install stuff you wont use just because a package says it has to be there.

Re: xfce4 panel

More "cruft" than "dependency hell"; the latter typically means you need to track down dependencies - or specific versions of dependencies - yourself, and manage any potential borkage on your own.  But then, as cruft goes, is a single 2.3MiB package really enough to loose sleep over?

Re: xfce4 panel

I take your point. I wasn't going to lose any sleep over it I just happened to notice it when doing an upgrade and thought it was out of place. Having now learnt how to check dependancies for specific apps I have now removed Gnome-Mplayer as I was able to check and see it wouldn't take anything else with it.

CrunchBang is great OTOTB and for most users, supplying just what is needed

Debian netinstall is for those of us who want to choose what we want and do not want.

Choices.  smile

It's a packaging thing. A general purpose Thunar install will pull in exo, thunar-volman, xfce panel and other stuff. A --no-install-recommends will be more barebones. The operating assumption being you will be using Thunar with XFCE.

Generally dependency hell means that you have to search various sites for different dependency versions and hope for the best.  That generally doesn't happen with Debian.

I totally agree with you VastOne and I have dabbled with my own netinstall on occasion as well. At the moment though I would say my skill level lies somewhere between someone who uses #! OTOB & someone who is completely comfortable going the netinstall route.

For the time being I think I'll stick with installing #! & adding/removing the things I feel I need to customise it just for me.

Re: xfce4 panel

Becker,

You could look at SpaceFM, as an alternative to Thunar (and xfce4-panel). It's the replacement to PCManFM Mod...simple but also powerful as an alternative.

Re: xfce4 panel

I see xfce4-panel more as an hidden feature of #!
Did you have a friend that needs a traditional panel and/or a traditional menu (I think that to update the menu manually is the biggest threat for newbies)? Voilà: launch xfce panel and they are ready to go with CB smile

Re: xfce4 panel

XFCE (and OpenBox)  broke my Windows dependency on a "taskbar".

Re: xfce4 panel

Oh there are so many panels to choose from big_smile fbpanel has conquered my heart recently, has a menu button, launchers, window buttons, workspace switcher, network/CPU graph, systray and a clock that is purple/blue by default (lol) And a nice config file.

Re: xfce4 panel

^ I like fbpanel also, but it seems to have the same mem leak issues that lxpanel suffers from.

Re: xfce4 panel

^ does it? Let's check the dependencies, must be one of them causing it:

In common they have:
libc6
libglib2.0-0
libgtk2.0-0
libx11-6

Pick your fave. If it's causing trouble, it's usually X11.
