Guys, has any of you tried out an Antivirus that works (with gui) on CrunchBang?
the idea is to use it to clean usb drives and prevent re sending mail that have windows viruses to other users....
Tried Avast, installs ok, Gui works but after update ERROR reinitializing core or something like that.
Avast no gui
Bit defender installs, updates after reboot wont run....
Ideas?

I've installed, but never had to use Clam-tk (clam anti-virus, with a GUI).
Only used seriously to scan flash-drives that have been used on Windows machines, otherwise I think it's a waste of system resources.

I use bitdefender occasionally and it works well. I have had no problems with the updates. What errors are you getting?
I've made a huge mistake

Hello everyone. BitDefender scanner for unices marks a segmentation fault during its execution after its firts update; if this is the problem you're writing about, this is what i have done in the past to solve the mentioned issue: http://unices.bitdefender.com/2011/11/0 … or-unices/. As an extra mention, the updating process executed using the gui (bdgui) gives some problems; so i recommend insted the usage of the cli:
bdscan --updateHave a nice day!.
Edit: clam av is also a good option.

While I'm not worried about malware on Linux, this looks to be a treat gathering steam rather than going away.

Bombastic, to be sure. Over the top? Guilty.
But I usually see it reported on first there, and then it gets picked-up by CNET or ZDNET a day or two later.

It would be nice if some of #! Gurus could tell us noobs in an step buy step sort of tutorial
1- WHICH antivirus works best on our OS both for manual scanning AND real time protection...
2- How to install it and configure it...

It's a trojan and keylogger, not a virus. Nothing new. It requires someone (with admin passwords) to download and install it (knowingly or otherwise). It won't install or replicate by itself on your system, media or network. So if you install apps from unknown sources or are vulnerable to social engineering attacks, you'll be in danger by this or any other trojan/keylogger. It's also easy to detect, block and remove. It will be a compromised application, yes.
I have the feeling that this is just business as usual. I believe most viruses are built and spread or contracted by the same anti-viruses companies/makers. They'll be in trouble when no more viruses are around. And Linux is a growing market to explore...

Sorry, problem is anti-virus on Linux is like using alligator repellent in the desert; if you don't see any alligators, it must be working, right?
As for installing, type sudo apt-get install clamtk into your terminal. Clamtk is the GUI front-end of the program, and Debian will automatically install the supporting programs with it. I don't use it often enough to edit it into the menu, but Alt+F2 clamtk brings it up. Check-mark all the boxes under preferences, and you're done.

OK will explore it, I read mixed "reviews" or comments about clamtk out there, mixed meaning its quality or capability in detecting and stopping "nasties" compared to some full "commercial" AV, even free ones like Avast, etc.
I tried with Avast and Bitdefender, but as I mentioned some place in this forum both gave errors or crashes, even following homepage intructions to the letter..
Will try clamtk ¿does it do real time protection or just manual scans?
Thanks for your time. :-)

^ Hello ElQuia. I haven't used the mentioned program; personally i have never had a positive virus detection and never received a related complaint over sent files. I think you should first evaluate all the free available options (clam av, bitdefender, avast, avg, avira, ...) before deciding to buy a program; some of they need some little tweaking to properly work (i left you a link in my prior comment to the solution of the mentioned bitdefender problem, it's from an official source and i have done this many times without issues). I hope you are having a great day!.

Sorry,
but I combed the forum for any useful information about virus-scanning - it seems that there is'nt any.
Is it useful to get any "anti-virus"-program or not? I also searched the web for it, but there is'nt any usable information...
(
Would anybody recommend *any* antivirus-program for linux (#!)?
ANY answers appreciated!
Regards,
MisterPink

^ If you read this very thread, it looks like Clam-tk is a good option if you share files with Mac/Win users.

At this point, no.
That answer may change in the future, but for now, no.
Most of the anti-virus programs out there for linux are for the purpose of booting into a LiveCD environment and fixing a Windows machine. Likewise scanning a flash-drive from Linux useful, but more often than not, pointless.
If you feel uncomfortable, install clam-tk. Do a weekly scan, and get the same result of "zero infected files" for a while, and eventually forget about it. The result will be the same as if you didn't have anything installed, but they are your system resources to be spent however you see fit.

Hello #!er,
thanks for your replies.
@pvsage:
I read the thread and agree, but I wanted to know, if there is something for native linux, not for windows-devices.
I was wondering about, because with the latest java hole in mind there *might* someone drop something bad also to your linux system...something like the thing discribed here: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/08/29 … ac_trojan/
or here: http://www.technocrates.org/java-based- … x-and-mac/
What do you folks, who have *really* deeper knowledge of linux, think about that?
Greetings,
MisterPink

I was only bothered about viruses when I first started using Linux. Then I forgot about them. Always a bit surprised at Windows users fear of them.
Doesn't really answer your question, but hey, if they endlessly send me docx format documents that I have to maneuverer around, and act pretty disinterested when I ask them not to, I kind of feel its fine if I act as a medium through which viruses take their course. It's not something I worry about, at all...

Yes, I'm also not *really* bothered, but thought that it's maybe time to think it over...
You know, I just don't want to be the first to tap into, so I guessed to ask some other guys for their honest opinion right at this time...
