Waldorf - Eee PC 701 4G

After having successfully switched my main machine to Waldorf i was curious to see how the latest CB would perform on the Eee. It's running live from USB stick created with dd - but i can't do a install to the internal SSD - just some flickering in the upper corners of the built-in display after selecting the install option.

Has anyone had more success and may share some knowledge?

Waldorf works on my  EEE 900A.  Clean install of /   Cherry picked certain dot files (.unison .ssh .etc) to save and purged rest of dot files.  Results - Very pleased.

@saneks

Same here - it's running the installed CB10 just fine.
A live system of Waldorf is fine as well.
I just can't start the graphical installer ...

@paxmark1

Great - did you use the grapical installer of Waldorf or how did you manage to fire up a text install?

@saneks

Yes - i wanted to try the text install but i can't ...
The install option on the Waldorf boot screen offers NO text install option ...

For eee 900a and the amd eeebox   installed via the graphical method.  I did not even look as to how to use text - ncurses.

Re: Waldorf - Eee PC 701 4G

@tonyoptical

This is Debian installer bug #604101. Work around as follows.

(1) Boot your eee 701 from Waldorf live CD.

(2) On live CD menu, use cursor keys to highlight Install option (but don't press Enter yet).

(3) Press Tab once (not Enter) to bring up the installer's boot prompt (showing default boot options in play).

(4) Type (without quotes) "vga=normal fb=false" to set additional boot options for the installer (needed to squash the bug).

(5) Press Enter to boot the installer with the additional options.

(6) Proceed with normal installation on your eee 701.

Re: Waldorf - Eee PC 701 4G

My experience w/ 701 4G eee for other linux distros (but not #!).   Sometime USB doesn't work.
Using an external CD/DVD burner work better.  Can you borrow a media burner if you don't have one?

Re: Waldorf - Eee PC 701 4G

@tonyoptical: Glad it's working. We think so too.

Three other issues for me with eee 701 4G.

(1) BBS Popup (confession). Took forever to realize to press Esc on power-up to boot cleanly/consistently from USB. Couldn't do it by setting Boot Device Priority in BIOS.

(2) Small SSD. Recommend install linux instead to larger SD card. If Grub and /boot are on SD card too, make SD card 1st Drive under Hard Disk Drives on Boot tab in BIOS. If grub and /boot are on SSD, leave SSD as 1st Drive.

(3) Windows. Recommend not worth the fight to try to run it natively on eee 701 4G (not even crippled ASUS OEM XP Home). Recommend install instead on virtual machine on linux on SD card.

Re: Waldorf - Eee PC 701 4G

hey, I also have EEE PC but 702 8GB and 1GB RAM and also i've got blinking thingie on top of the screen and already have tried to add boot options

vga=normal fb=false

but with no success. those options are for text install according to that BUG mentioned above by Big D.
smile actually don't have any experience with text install, so maybe its good it didn't go through smile

... in that boot option was last mentioned

file=/cdrom/install/crunchbang.cfg

and there I added 'vga=normal fb=false' with no space between ...

But problem might be that that I am using USB flash drive to install Waldorf and in boot options is mentioned cdrom.
ok let me try again do the install.

EDIT:

yes there needs to be space between "file=/cdrom/install/crunchbang.cfg vga=normal fb=false"
then it went through.

Re: Waldorf - Eee PC 701 4G

Another thing to think about when installing on the EeePC 701 4G is not to attempt any other variant than installing all in one partition. The other partitioning schemes didn't work for at all for me. It took me five installation attempts to get that one right  wink

Re: Waldorf - Eee PC 701 4G

just moved from Xubuntu 10 (laggy video/stuttering audio) to Waldorf (youtube & vlc play movies much smoother) on my eee701.

@ Big D:
Thanks for the vga=... hint smile The Pause/Break key pauses the boot process so it is easier to spot the "press XYZ key for UVW..."-line on nearly all bioses i've seen (including my eee701).

@ fighterhayabusa:
Manual partitioning (4GB internal SSD as / bootable and an internally mounted/soldered Sandisk Cruzer micro 4GB as /home) worked for me. If using manual partitioning, flash-memory-friendly settings like "noatime" can be set directly during setup.

Re: Waldorf - Eee PC 701 4G

On the latest Debian 7.0 RC1 iso is fixed. I think in the next #! snapshot it will be solved.
