My wifi icon only comes up to say I am connected when I plug an external stick in. It doesn't seem to detect my internal wifi even when I am online.
Can anyone help please?

The wifi icon is provided by network manager, a program regulating network connections. You're not using network manager for your primary connection, xaos has set you up with the simpler and more reliable method via the /etc/network/interfaces file. That's why no icon is showing up for your internal network. This is not a bad thing, as long as the network is operational, there's no need to worry.

Hi El_K
I am not worried. I just don't like seeing the "no network connection" icon at the top of my screen. I want the one that tells you that you are connected and how much % your wifi is at.
I get it if I put a wifi stick in but not if I am using my internal wifi.
Just annoys me.
I do thank XAOS52 for what he has done for me though

Alternatively, you can put this in .conkyrc to have info about the network:

Did both of the above ^
It seemed to work and my icon came up great. But then it just kept disconnecting and reconnecting so I changed it back.

I suppose that's why the good doctor set you up with the alternative. My advice is, learn to live without the icon, it's not worth the trouble.

Oh b*gger. Guess so.
Thanks for trying to help.

Yeah, as el koraco said, network manager usually handles network connections. However, it has some issues with certain hardware and in these cases, it's better to manage connections the way you're doing it now. This unfortunately means that you won't have that little icon but you're still connected, which is all that's necessary anyway. If you don't like seeing the little icon with 'no connection', you could always go to /home/username/.config/openbox/autostart and comment out (place a # in front of) the line "(sleep 4s && nm-applet) &". That should prevent the icon from displaying.

@fortyseven
I commented the line out but the icon remains..

oops! late to the party and it's Fri the 13th here..
Seems you already got all the practical advice..
Are you using an OpenBox or Xfce manager for your desktop?
I am in Sid tonight but I have to take a look at my Statler before I quit just to see what I have as I know that my panel displays a WiFi/Etho icon..

I am back in Statler ..
Your wifi seems to be eth1..
As the above states commenting out direct reference to eth1 should give you the results you seek.
I only keep two lines in that config in all my Debian installs..
auto lo
iface lo inet loopbackI let NetworkManager-Applet or Wicd Applet or CENI app handle the that info..
Although you might want to leave the the WPA security lines in place and only comment out the
#hotplug eth1
#iface eth1 inet dhcp and see if that gives you the desired results..
Other then that try a different Manager.. if you like
Or there are panel apps that just display status and do no controlling..

What happens when I comment out those lines is that my computer constantly tries to connect to the internet and keeps asking for my password.

#wpa-debug-level 3
#wpa-ssid xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
#wpa-psk yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
I was suggesting One of Two paths...
#1 As you were already advised comment out the lines in /etc/networks/interfaces
as below but you say that causing an Icon indicator Flashing..
# The loopback network interface
#hotplug eth1
#iface eth1 inet dhcp
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
wpa-debug-level 3
wpa-ssid xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
wpa-psk yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy#2 Or Changing to another Network manager for the panel Panel
....yet leaving it as was originally and add a different Wifi managager... from Synaptics..
I believe we are using NetworkManager-applet but there is WiCD also WiFi-Radar just to mention two others..
These will allow you in there GUI Properties to choose the Interface, Host, DHCP and WPA passwords as I remember. This would require that the apps are configured and all else commented out.
# The loopback network interface
#hotplug eth1
#iface eth1 inet dhcp
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
#wpa-debug-level 3
#wpa-ssid xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
#wpa-psk yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy Those are the two possible solutions based on the info I see there...
Of course as was said above (el_koraco) the Icon is not a Great loss if all works..
#3... I do remember seeing some panel apps in the Past (can't remember names will have to search) that did not configuration but simply displayed a Connection..
