Just looking at the first link, I think you might be reading it wrong; the power consumption graphs show LXDE and Openbox consuming less power (less is better) and delivering higher frame rates (more is better). Perhaps you're mistaking the KDE power consumption curves (bright red) for Openbox (dark red)?
EDIT: I'm not sure the differences in power consumption are big enough to even be statistically significant...

My xfce is just as light as openbox. Uses 155mb idle upon startup.

Openbox doesn't include a power manager but you can install one if you like (CrunchBang has xfce power manager I believe).

Also, anyone know why gnome unfortuantely seems to handle power management better than xfce on my computer.
Because the xfce4-power-manager is still buggy enough to make problems. Though I still use it.
