How To: Post pictures on this forum (or any forum)

1)  Find a good image hosting website like Omploader (it's "good" because it doesn't have popup adds and other annoyances).

2)  Take a screenshot using either the Print Screen key on your keyboard or the CLI command Scrot (example usage:  $ scrot -cd 10 mypicture.jpg  <this will take a picture of your desktop in 10 seconds, you can adjust the number up or down according to your needs, the filename can be whatever you desire)

3)  Go to your chosen image hosting website and upload the image.  If you used Print Screen the picture is saved in ~/images , if you used scrot command the picture is saved in your base user directory /home/username.

tMWdncw

After uploading you will get links to that file on the image hosting site.  For omploader it will be the bottom most text (BBCode:):

tMWdndA

Copy that text and paste it "as is" in your message on the forum.  It will display a thumbnail:

tMWdndw

If you need to edit your picture before you upload, let's say you only want to display a portion of your screenshot, load the image in Gimp and use the selection tool, select the area and use Image>Crop to Selection.

Final note:  Print Screen will save the image in PNG format, scrot will save it in the format you gave as the image file extension, in the above example of scrot it will save in JPG.

I view KDE like I view snow. It looks fun and marvelous, it's fun to play in, but after a while I just want someone to take it all away.

Thanks for the tips, We really need to get a forum 101 thread setup that can include the obvious stuff like this.

Obvious to us, being the important bit.

Otherwise we wouldn't need the Forum 101 idea. wink

Re: How To: Post pictures on this forum (or any forum)

Yeah, I have seen posts mentioning not knowing how to post a screenshot before and generally, since it is mentioned in the heat of a discussion on a more urgent topic, no one responds.  There is one such in a post about searching files, I was about to post a response in that thread but figured a How To with a link would be less distracting to the thread's topic.

I hadn't considered some of the more basic how-to's like this could probably just be linked off other forums like Ubuntu or Archwiki.

So do you my friend smile A new thread is just a couple of mouse clicks away. The problem for lots of us with these types of posts/threads is time and commitment to maintenance.

If anyone would like to set it up I'd be happy to sticky it for you.

Sub-HowTo sticky, I think.

STICKY:  The Great GrandaddyHow-ToStickyOfThemAll

In that post would be links to sub-thread How-To's, which also have sub-threads.

Can we get this stickied?  Not to toot my own horn, it was a basic piece, but it does come up and this isn't even on the front page when folks go looking....maybe just sticky it in the screenshots forum?

Re: How To: Post pictures on this forum (or any forum)

If you ever go looking for stuff on old forums, one of the things that really annoys is where people have posted pictures to illustrate something, and are often the main content, ie the text just says "take a look" or whatever.  And the pictures are missing.  This happens quite frequently with external hosting sites - either the entire site goes belly-up, or the account hosting the image expires through lack of use etc.

Is it possible to host images on crunchbanglinux itself, is there a phpBB (or whatever this forum is) extension to allow that?  I realise that would mean a big increase in storage required.

Really, I don't think you can beat deviantart.com as a place to store images. Most of the pictures posted here are desktop screenshots which are a legitimate category for posting on your deviantart site and other smaller images can be safely stored in a users scrapbook. DeviantArt has been around for a long time now and should be with us well into the future.

I know it's good practice to include a thumbnail in the post, linking to the full size image; I notice omploader creates a thumbnail and it's url automatically, some of the others don't.

Re: How To: Post pictures on this forum (or any forum)

i was using imageshack and picasa for image uploading. I wasnt happy with imageshack's interface speed. So i decided to check out omploader. And what's the first thing i see? Profile pictures of half-naked men; not women but men. I am sticking with imageshack.

Re: How To: Post pictures on this forum (or any forum)

I have been thinking about creating an image upload service for these forums. I need to do some sums to work out how much it would cost -- I have a feeling it might be too expensive to maintain. Still, it would be interesting to know if anyone would actually use such a service?

Someone did this for reddit.com and digg.com, it's appreciated there and runs on donations, but the costs are more than what they get:
imgur.gif
He's a nice guy, if you wanted to know details you can easily contact him at his email on the homepage.

*Ignore this part now*
For some reason its hosted images don't work in #! forums.  Otherwise I would recommend using it here, it's a good image host and we'd only use a fraction of the bandwidth they normally go through.

Edit: For some reason the only thing I can get to work is that one image lol
Even linking to http://imgur.com/ doesn't work unless I have referrals turned off in browser.  i.imgur.com/imagepath works, but imgur.com is blocked.

+Edit: Their webadmin set it up to work here now, which is good for me since it's the site I use  tongue

Testing 1 2 3:

Edit: it doesn't seem to work too well on these forums so Ill stick with the usual hosts.

Edit 2: its fixed now smile

Re: How To: Post pictures on this forum (or any forum)

With that whole sticky thing, there actually are users who won't even KNOW what a sticky is, and as such, being what that then indicates, we'd need a sticky to cover the terminology (say, "linux terminology 089", not even 101, or "Linux as a Third Language 088", preceeded by "Computers 087") and then somehow a way to help guide them over to actually READ that thread.

I remember when forums first began, and we went from BBC's to actual threads with links. Wow. I know that dates me, but hey... I STILL have one of my tape drives, like the actual TAPE. 286's rocked back then.

So, that said, "Sticky" means, "Things to know or read at some point and hopefully to understand"

Sticky...A banner at the top that hyper links to the sticky of them all

STICKY:  ThingsToKnow&UnderstandAboutLinux,CrunchBang&YourComputerM'Kay?
     |__Link To Advanced Crunchbang How-To List
     |                                        |__Link To Advanced How-To 1
     |                                        |__Link To Advanced How-To 2
     |__Link To Basic Crunchbang How-To List
     |                                        |__Link To Basic CB How-To 1
     |                                        |__Link To Basic CB How-To 2
     |__Link To Basic Forum How-To List
                                              |__Link To Basic Forum How-To 1
                                              |__Link To Basic Forum How-To 2

Now, since I don't know how to sticky that in a banner format at the top of all pages, and I can't find a "How To" sticky, I'll leave to the admins, who might need to leave that to the website gurus of HTML and such code, who might have to call up the ladder and see if this format (and package) allows for such customization.

I know my mom would sure like that, though I will still have to explain that a COMPUTER is the thing under the desk and the OPERATING SYSTEM is code on it, and they work together and can be exchanged, and, No, Linux isn't an operating system, and a program is something that runs on a computer, yes, kind of like the fans, and NO, you don't need to buy a $#*#&@! NEW %*$! computer just because the CD rom stopped working....

lol

just an idea:
use dropbox and a bash-script. Just did a few tests, and it should be relatively simple to make.

I'm thinking about the following scenario:
I have an image to show. It's called thereyougo.png and it's in ~/images/for/the/web/.
I use a command like

dropbox_image ~/images/for/the/web/thereyougo.png

to resize the image twice (a thumbnail and a bigger version), copy those 2 images to my Dropbox/Public/ folder, synchronize dropbox and return something like

[url=http://link/to/big/version][img]http://link/to/thumbnail[/img][/url]

sounds like a nice little project for me tonight tongue
